James Cameron has slammed Amy Poehler over a joke that she made about his marriage to fellow filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow.
The 71-year-old director – whose film Avatar: Fire And Ash earned a very impressive $345 million worldwide over the weekend – pulled no punches on 54-year-old Poehler as he said her joke went ‘too far’ and even called it ‘ignorant’ despite insisting that he has ‘thick skin.’
For context, Cameron was married to Bigelow, 74, from 1989 to 1991 and was nominated for political thriller Zero Dark Thirty – which included depictions of torture – at the 2013 Golden Globes which Poehler was hosting alongside Tina Fey.
During the opening monologue the comedian joked: ‘When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.’
Now, Cameron has finally expressed his displeasure with the joke nearly 13 years later during a new interview with The New York Times.
He said: ‘Amy Poehler’s remark was an ignorant dig, at an event which is supposed to be a celebration of cinema and filmmakers, not a roast.

‘I’m pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far.’
During the 2013 awards ceremony, the crowd reacted with uproarious laughter with plenty of audience members reacting with shock.
Cameron continued: ‘The fact that people found it funny shows exactly what they think of me, even though they have no idea who I am or how I work.’
Poehler is no stranger to a high-profile divorce as she split from fellow comedian Will Arnett in 2016 after 13 years of marriage.
In the recent interview, Cameron talked about facing off with his ex Bigelow at the 2010 Oscars as they were both up for Best Director which the former wife took home for The Hurt Locker over his blockbuster Avatar.
Cameron said that he was supportive of his former spouse when she bested him as he told the New York Times: ‘I was the first one on my feet applauding.’
The director praised Bigelow – whom he called a ‘remarkable person’ – as he revealed that they still advise each other on projects.
He explained: ‘ Kathryn and I thought the whole meta-narrative around us was pretty funny. I was a little concerned that it would just take away from her credibility as a filmmaker. It started to turn into a conversation that wasn’t about her film, and that bothered both of us.’

Cameron has not been holding back recently as he also blasted Matt Damon’s viral claims that he turned down a lead role in Avatar – and subsequently missed out on a $290 million payday.
The filmmaker offered clarification during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.
Damon previously shared that he chose to not take on the role of Jake Sully – which went on to be played by Sam Worthington.
The Martian actor has also claimed that Cameron proposed to give him ’10 percent’ of the film’s profits. The 2009 epic sci-fi movie raked in $2.9 billion in the box office, with Damon allegedly losing out on a paycheck worth hundreds of millions.
‘He was never offered the part,’ the director told the outlet. ‘I can’t remember if I sent him the script or not. I don’t think I did?’
Cameron recalled a phone conversation with Damon where he expressed interest in Avatar, but was devoted to doing a Jason Bourne film which caused a ‘conflict’ in terms of scheduling.
‘But he was never offered. There was never a deal. We never talked about the character. We never got to that level. It was simply an availability issue,’ the Oscar-winning director said.
‘Now what he’s done is he’s extrapolated “I get 10 percent of the gross on all my films.”‘

Despite disputing the actor’s viral claims, Cameron shared his own interest in collaborating with the Good Will Hunting star in the future.
He also shared he respected Damon for personally reaching out to him in regards to turning down Avatar due to scheduling issues.
‘So all respect to Matt. I’d love to work with him someday,’ Cameron said before further emphasizing, ‘But that never happened. It was a conflation of different things that were happening.’
Daily Mail has reached out to Damon’s reps for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
Avatar was released in theaters in 2009 and starred Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver.

Back in 2019, Damon said that it was one of his ‘bigger regrets’ in life to not star in Cameron’s film.
‘Jim Cameron offered me Avatar. And when he offered it to me, he goes, “Now, listen. I don’t need anybody. I don’t need a name for this, a named actor,”‘ the actor told British GQ.
‘”If you don’t take this, I’m gonna find an unknown actor and give it to him, because the movie doesn’t really need you. But if you take the part, I’ll give you 10 percent of [the movie’s takings],”‘ Damon further claimed Cameron had told him.
Damon also expressed regret over possibly not having the opportunity to ever work with Cameron.
‘He works so infrequently, but his movies, you know all of them. So it feels like he’s made more than he has.’

He had also been joined by Saldana at the time who told him, ‘I don’t think your career suffered because of it, trust me.’
Damon jokingly replied, ‘Do you know what kind of movie that would’ve been if I would had been in it?’
The actor later expressed, ‘I’ve probably done, like, 50 movies. I’ve never been in a movie that made $1 billion.’

Avatar: Fire And Ash – which had a budget of over $400 million – opened with $345 million in worldwide sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
That is the second-best global debut of the year which potentially puts Cameron on course to set yet more blockbuster records.
Sixteen years into the Avatar saga, Pandora is still abundant in box-office riches.
Fire and Ash, the third film in Cameron´s science-fiction franchise, launched with $88 million domestically and $257 million internationally. The only film to open bigger in 2025 was Zootopia 2 ($497.2 million over three days).
Worthington, Saldana, Weaver and Lang have reprised their roles alongside other cast members such as Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin and Cliff Curtis.
Two additional sequels are set to follow Fire And Ash to be released in 2029 and later in 2031 respectively.
