Joe Bowen Analyzes Maple Leafs’ Early Season Struggles

Legendary Toronto Maple Leafs announcer Joe Bowen recently discussed the team’s early struggles. Fans understandably have high hopes for the Leafs. However, the team hasn’t met expectations and their recent performances have raised concerns among supporters.

After 11 games in the 2025-26 NHL season, the Leafs sit tied for last in the Eastern Conference standings. Their 5-5-1 record has fans questioning what’s wrong.

During his appearance on The Leafs Nation’s Leafs Morning Take, Bowen analyzed the team’s poor results. He mentioned that the Toronto Blue Jays‘ World Series run served as a positive distraction. Still, he believes the Leafs lack a clear identity and need a spark.

“This team usually comes out spinning it’s wheels [in October] and they really haven’t gotten any traction yet,” Bowen said. “I think they’re looking for their identity, I think they’re looking for obviously some consistency. And that starts right from the goaltender on out.”

Joe Bowen Says It’s Too Soon to Panic for Maple Leafs

Despite the team’s struggles, Joe Bowen believes it’s still too early to panic. Hope remains, but results must come soon to lift morale.

Bowen addressed the fanbase’s frustrations and maybe even losing patience. He stressed the importance of the Leafs finding their form.

“I think it’s way too early to mashing of teeth and grinding of fists into what they’re doing. But, they have to get things kind of turned around. There’s no two ways about that,” Bowen told Leafs Morning Take. “They’ve got to get their act together, they’ve got to start producing more, they’ve got to be a lot more consistent, and they’ve got to be better at both ends of the rink.”

Bowen also highlighted speed as being an area of weakness so far.

“They’ve looked slow and lots of times, that’s not skating speed, it’s puck movement,” Bowen said. “That’s one of the things I think that has to improve and once that improves, I think a lot of other things will happen in a domino effect, if you will.”

Bowen Shares His Perspective from Press Box

From his spot in Scotiabank Arena’s press box, Bowen has observed the Leafs closely during radio broadcasts. The longtime voice of the Leafs noted that there has been significant roster turnover.

Bowen acknowledged the Leafs need time to adjust, whether to a new system or to develop chemistry with linemates. He also recalled advice from his former broadcast colleague, Harry Neale, about adapting to changes.

“You’ve got lots of new people and they’re being asked to do a different system or  adhere to what the coaching staff is doing,” Bowen told Leafs Morning Take. “I remember Harry Neale’s great line was, ‘Don’t think, you’ll hurt the team.’ And maybe what we’re seeing is some people overthinking.”

He continued:

“Don’t overthink the situation. Adhere to the policy of what they want to do as a group and everything else,” Bowen said. “I think that maybe sometimes you just got to, ‘You know what? Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead. Let’s get it going.’”
