Pop superstar Katy Perry has found herself in the firing line after fans blasted her for what they called a ‘tone-deaf’ response to a follower who admitted she might have to sell her concert ticket just to survive.
The social media storm erupted when a fan named Ria took to X on Tuesday to reveal she was struggling financially and considering offloading a ticket to one of the singer’s upcoming European shows.
‘I so badly don’t wanna be here anymore. I’m not cut out for this world like I cannot afford to live at this rate and I’m so close to selling my Katy ticket,’ she wrote.
Perry – whose Lifetimes Tour pulled in more than $134 million in ticket sales in 2025 – replied simply: ‘But I am looking forward to seeing you!’
But the brief response quickly sparked backlash, with fans accusing the pop star of missing the point of the emotional message.
‘This is so grim…. Not even an offer of a free ticket or help offered… girl,’ wrote one critic, while another fumed: ‘Wow Katy, you’re clearly so out of touch! You just keep living your out of touch high life while everyone else is barely able to afford essentials (food, rent, insurance).’

The pile-on continued, with another critic writing: ‘I’m genuinely losing it at the audacity. No ticket or anything? Just straight up left you hanging. Where is the hospitality girl.’
Yet another added: ‘If you “loved her”, you’d give her a VIP Meet and Greet Package and tell her to sell the ticket so she could have extra money to enjoy the show.
‘This is so tone deaf lmao.’
Still, the backlash wasn’t one-sided.
Plenty of loyal fans rushed to defend Katy Perry, with one firing back: ‘honestly, if she did help publicly, you’d just say she was doing it for clout. there is literally no winning with people like you.’
Another agreed, posting: ‘you’d be calling her performative the second she helped publicly. you’re just looking for a reason to be mad.’
For her part, Ria appeared grateful the singer had responded at all, quickly replying to Perry’s message: ‘I love you.’
When another fan commented ‘congrats’, she added: ‘Thank you, was needed and I’m grateful for it.’

And when a follower checked in, writing ‘omg ria really hope you’re ok girly,’ Ria reassured them: ‘Yeah just going through a tough patch at the moment.’
Support continued to pour in from other fans, with one writing: ‘OMG Ria! Katy Perry replied! I really hope you can still see Katy! We will have the best time seeing her like we did at The Lifetimes Tour, and my DMs are always open if you need to talk. I am so sorry to hear how bad things have been recently! Sending you so much love!’ – to which Ria simply replied: ‘Thank you.’
The following day, Ria returned to X to reflect on the unexpected moment, writing: ‘Honestly didn’t expect to wake up to find Katy saw my tweet. How? I don’t know but I’m grateful and I hope it helps others too.’
She also reposted another supportive message from a fan that read: ‘katy really knows how to show up when we need it most, she’s so beautiful.’
Daily Mail has reached out to Ria and representatives for Perry for comment.
The backlash comes despite Perry being widely praised for her compassion during another fan interaction earlier in her Lifetimes Tour.
Back in August, the Teenage Dream singer, 40, welcomed a handful of concertgoers on stage at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
In a tense moment, one fan, named McKenna, collapsed, and Perry stayed by her side to make sure she was safe.
Some fans supported Perry, while Ria let followers know she’s ‘grateful and hopes it helps others’
Noticing McKenna was struggling emotionally, Perry handed out what appeared to be shaker instruments to the chosen audience members, encouraging them: ‘Let’s practice. You got this, and let’s breathe,’ according to a video shared on social media.
When McKenna fell to the ground, Perry knelt beside her, supporting her head until medics arrived, before gathering the rest of the onstage fans for a heartfelt prayer.
‘Dear God, we pray for McKenna, that she will come back fully and brighter and better than ever. Amen,’ she said in another clip, later acknowledging the daunting nature of performing in front of thousands.
‘It’s so much,’ Perry admitted, per viral videos. ‘Sometimes you’re so brave and you can get on stage, and it’s overwhelming. I understand that feeling.’
Later in the show, she reassured the crowd: ‘McKenna’s doing great, by the way.’
Offstage, Perry has been moving from strength to strength in her personal life, now dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Last year, she split from Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares five-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, after nearly nine years together.
