Having been used in clothing as far back as the 16th century, it’s safe to say that lace is a trend with real staying power. Of course, like with any trend, its popularity has had peaks and troughs over the years, but this season it’s firmly back in the fashion pack’s good books.
From lingerie-inspired designs at Alberta Ferretti to whimsical eveningwear at Bora Aksu and boho gowns at Chloé, the trend took on many iterations on the AW 25 catwalks. One of our favourite takes, however, was that of Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior in her penultimate collection as the brand’s womenswear creative director. Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando, the designer used lace to add a romantic feel to otherwise utilitarian items like macs or masculine suiting.
Lace can be a tricky trend to pull off, thanks to its association with the old-fashioned, meaning – if not styled carefully – it can feel frumpy or dated. To avoid this, keep to slinkier styles like slip dresses and skirts, and avoid anything with too much material. There are lots of tiered skirts and billowing pussy-bow lace blouses on the high street right now – while they can look chic, all the material often just looks too busy.
For a masterclass in wearing the trend, look to actress Sienna Miller, whose boho wardrobe is full of beautiful lace styles. By pairing lace blouses and dresses with simple pieces like denim jeans or minimalist biker jackets, she never fails to look chic.
