Lady Gaga rocks a ruffled gothic look at VMAs 2025

Mother Monster is in the house.

Though Lady Gaga is in the middle of her “Mayhem” tour — and has a concert later tonight at Madison Square Garden — she made time amid the madness to make an appearance at the MTV VMAs 2025.

The singer, 39, wore a puff-sleeved Marc Jacobs black and purple gown with extravagant all-over ruffles and lace to the ceremony, where she accepted an award for artist of the year.

“I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances, but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden,” she said at the end of her acceptance speech.

She accented her black mini-bangs and teased bun with a mauve and burgundy floral headpiece.

Her makeup — bleached brows, heavily lined red lips, and dramatic copper eyeshadow — added to the gothic glamour of the look.

Gaga is the most nominated artist of the night, leading the charge with 12 nods. Her “Die With a Smile” collaborator, Bruno Mars, follows in her footsteps with 11 nominations.

Not only is Gaga up for the night’s biggest award, video of the year for the song, which was the fastest ever to reach 2 billion streams on Spotify, but she’s also nominated in the categories of song of the year, best collaboration, best pop video, best album, best direction for “Abracadabra” and more.

Gaga is performing in NYC at Madison Square Garden, while the awards show — which includes performances by Sabrina Carpenter, Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey and others — is underway at UBS Arena on Long Island.

She kicked off the “Mayhem” world tour in July in Las Vegas, incorporating many of the same spooky costumes and references to her decades-long career in her epic April Coachella 2025 headlining performance.

The superstar has always been a major player at the VMAs. She made her debut with a huge splash, performing an epic and memorable rendition of “Paparazzi” that saw her covered in fake blood on stage in 2009.

She’s worn some of her most iconic looks on the red carpet over the years, too, including the iconic “meat dress” by Franc Fernandez she wore in 2010 to protest the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy. And in 2011, she came dressed in drag as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone.

The pop star has not made an appearance, however, since 2020’s virtual red carpet, where she wore an array of COVID-19-inspired face masks and baby blue hair to promote her “Chromatica” album.
