Macaulay Culkin has revealed the terrifying truth about how the heartbreaking My Girl scene was filmed after producers released 'thousands of bees' on him when he was just 10 years old

Macaulay Culkin has revealed how the tragic bee scene in My Girl was really filmed as he admitted it ‘would not fly nowadays.’

The Home Alone star, now 45, starred as Thomas J in the classic coming-of-age movie in 1991 alongside Anna Chlumsky, who played Vada, when he was just 10 years old.

In the tragic scene Thomas J. returns to the woods to search for Vada’s mood ring, but he doesn’t realise the beehive they knocked down is still active and he is swarmed and killed by the bees due to his allergy.

And now Macaulay has revealed producers did in fact release ‘thousands’ of bees on him in order to create the scene.

Appearing on the podcast On Film…. With Kevin McCarthy, the star explained: ‘The way they did that, they would not do that today.

‘They put this stuff on my fingertips that smelt like the queen bee, so they were attracted to my hands. So I wasn’t a threat.

‘They actually released thousands of bees on me, like imagine that.’

As host Kevin asked: ‘Are you joking?’ he added ‘No I am not joking, those are real bees. That would not fly nowadays.

‘And they just told me to wave my hands in front of my face so the bees would come and it would look good for the camera.

‘As soon as they yelled cut they had hot soapy water for me to put my hands into and then I had to dart into the woods.

‘The bee handler gave me a piece of advice. He said “Human beings can run faster than bees fly” and I was like “But I am 10, how fast do you think I am?”‘.

Macualay confirmed they did four takes with the bees, however the star only got stung once in the neck.

It comes after Macaulay revealed he’s ‘not completely allergic’ to the idea of him reprising his breakout role as Kevin McCallister in another Home Alone sequel.

The former child star teased at his Nostalgic Night event on Saturday: ‘It would have to be just right.’

The star explained: 'The way they did that, they would not do that today. 'They put this stuff on my fingertips that smelt like the queen bee, so they were attracted to my hands'

It’s been 35 years since the star first portrayed the eight-year-old boy fending off robbers in 20th Century Fox’s 1990 comedy Home Alone and 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which amassed a combined $835.7 million at the box office.

Alex D. Linz starred in Raja Gosnell’s three-quel Home Alone 3 alongside Scarlett Johansson, but the following three flicks from the family-friendly franchise streamed directly on ABC and Disney+.

The native New Yorker has even developed a concept for a potential continuation of the treasured holiday classic.

‘I’m either a widower or a divorcé. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out,’ Macaulay explained.

‘[He] won’t let me in. He’s the one setting traps for me…The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship “get let back into his heart” kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.’
