Joey Diaz does the makeup for many of Kansas City Chiefs WAGs for every home game, and he has lifted a lid on what exactly goes into curating their enchanting appearances

When the Kansas City Chiefs hit the field for a football game, it’s safe to say that most eyes will be on the field… but the stands are often just as exciting as they’re usually filled with the NFL players’ stunning wives and girlfriends.

The Chiefs WAGs – like Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes – usually turn the sporting events into their own personal runways, showing up to the games in glamorous ensembles and of course, sporting a full face of glam.

Enter Joey Diaz, the man behind many of the WAGs’ alluring looks.

Diaz, 30, does the makeup for many of the sports stars’ partners for every home game, and he has lifted a lid on what exactly goes into curating their enchanting appearances.

He spoke exclusively with the Daily Mail about his go-to products, detailed the tips and tricks he uses to ensure their makeup lasts all day and shared a slew of behind-the-scenes secrets from working with the women.

Diaz, a Kansas City native, explained that he started his career off in retail, working in stores like Ulta and Sephora, but when the pandemic hit, he began ‘freelancing’ as a makeup artist.

‘I was just picking up any work I could, making myself extremely available, taking any free opportunity I could to get my name out there. I worked really hard,’ he shared.

In 2023, he was doing makeup for a client’s wedding and he crossed paths with Laura Beth – Mahomes’ hairstylist.

They hit it off right away and started ‘working a lot together,’ and he eventually landed a job at Artistry salon in Kansas City, which is used by most of the Chiefs WAGs.

Now, every time there’s a home game, you can catch him doing the makeup for many of the top players’ significant others.

He told the Daily Mail that on game days, he’s usually working on his first client by 6am or 7am.

They often come to the salon, but on rare occasions, he goes to their house to do their glam.

‘It’s a fun, chaotic day,’ he shared. ‘It’s a lot of coffee before the game… [but] working under pressure and [having to be] creative in the moment, it’s a lot of fun.’

Each session – for which he charges $200 – ranges from about 40 minutes to an hour and a half.

He makes sure to coordinate their makeup look with their hair and outfits so ‘everything is in unison.’

Diaz explained that sometimes, clients give him a ‘brief of what they’re looking for,’ but most of the time he has free range to decide what sort of glam to put on them.

Social media content is vital – and he helps the WAGs film TikTok videos throughout the process and of course snaps the perfect glam shot when their look is done.

‘Everything [has to look] perfect for the pictures,’ he explained. ‘It’s all about the pictures.’

Ensuring that their makeup is going to stay on throughout the game is also immensely important, so that if they step on the field when it ends hours later and get photographed, they still look amazing.

He credits Patrick Starrr’s One/Size On ‘Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray with ensuring his makeup lasts.

‘It prevents anything from moving, that’s the best trick I have,’ dished the makeup artist.

His other favorite products include the Haus Labs by Lady Gaga Triclone Foundation and the Rokael Beauty Refined Gold Velvet Lip Creme.

‘Powder down the lip with some powder, add lip liner, do more powder and then add your lip product and it’s bulletproof,’ he added.

While Diaz said he is ‘very confident in his work,’ that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make mistakes, and sometimes, he confessed that he doesn’t have the same vision as a client and has to quickly adjust.

‘If there is a mistake, I know how to fix it,’ he vowed. ‘And there are times where a client will ask you for a certain vision, but they don’t know how to explain communicate it.

‘So sometimes you’ll create a vision that’s not aligning. But it’s just a quick change. And fortunately, everyone always is happy.’

Diaz, who said he has not worked with Mahomes or Swift directly as they both have their own personal makeup artist, had nothing but positive things to say about the WAGs he has worked on.

‘I’m so fortunate where I haven’t had a bad client or any bad experiences,’ he dished. ‘I’ve heard stories, but for me, no, thank God, [no rude clients].

‘[The Chiefs WAGs] have always been the kindest, most communicative clients I’ve ever had.’
