Short of the political equivalent of a miracle, Zohran Mamdani is going to become New York City’s next mayor. Polling suggests Cuomo could win in a head to head race, but with Curtis Sliwa in the mix, Mamdani wins.

The new AtlasIntel survey, which dropped Monday afternoon, has Mamdani with 43.9% of support and Cuomo in second with 39.4%…

In a hypothetical two-way race, Cuomo tops Mamdani 49.7% to 44.1%.

Despite this looking a lot like a done deal, the Washington Post has published one more warning to New York City about just how extreme this candidate that they are about to elect really is.

The young politician was born into a life of wealth and privilege, and from that perch he adopted a worldview centered around destroying the economic system that made his adopted country thrive.

Voters have been reminded repeatedly about Mamdani’s long history of radical politics. The unapologetic socialist has called for higher taxes to fund government-run grocery stores, free child care, free public transportation and vastly expanded state power in the housing market. He once called the New York Police Department “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.” He suggests rerunning a long list of failed social policy experiments more worthy of a late-night bull session at Bowdoin College than a serious political platform.

Mamdani has walked back some of his old positions, but never very convincingly. While he apologized to the NYPD and said he would retain the current mayor’s police commissioner, he recently admitted he hadn’t spoken to her since making the offer. And while he no longer defends eliminationist rhetoric about Jews, he remains fixated with Israel. Whenever confronted with his most radical views, the undeniably talented politician simply smiles and pivots to “affordability.”

That empty smile that Mamdani gives when he’s dodging a question he doesn’t like is going to get really old over the next couple of years. Really, it’s already creepy now. Even SNL noticed.

Zohran Mamdani is being mocked by Saturday Night Live for his fake smile and insane socialist ideas.

He laughs about it because that’s his coping mechanism.

The Post points out that one poll found only 39% of those surveyed think he is qualified for the job he is seeking, compared to 47% who think he is unqualified. And yet, voters don’t seem to care about qualifications right now, partly because the main alternative, Cuomo, is tainted by scandal. They also don’t seem put off by his socialism even though the last socialist mayor didn’t work out so well.

It’s not enough to say socialism is bad; defenders of the American system have to show why people’s lives are improved by economic freedom — and why many American failures are often the result of government intervention rather than a free market run amok…

The best outcome would be for Mamdani to take a cautiously incremental approach and try pilot programs for his most radical ideas instead of immediately imposing them on the entire city. It seems that there are enough voters to put him in power — but if New Yorkers begin to flee in droves, it could force him to moderate.

In case you’ve forgotten, Bill de Blasio was also a socialist and his tenure was deemed a disaster by almost everyone.

“I will not tell you that Gucci and Tiffany are my central concerns in life,” the mayor declared in 2016, responding to the posh retailers’ fears about heightened security around neighboring Trump Tower costing them business.

That comment, perceived as dismissive, proved a headache for de Blasio’s private-sector liaisons, recalled Gregg Bishop, then the city’s commissioner for the Department of Small Business Services.

“I cannot tell you how much heat I got from the business community and I had to go and clean it up,” said Bishop, who largely defended the mayor’s record…

“De Blasio was dismissive of the business community, particularly the corporate community, and I think that cost the city a lot in terms of collaboration on economic and workforce development,” Kathy Wylde, head of New York’s leading business consortium, said in an interview.

Former spokesperson Eric Phillips said the approach excluded New Yorkers who are pivotal to the city’s economy. “Ultimately I don’t think that strategy did anybody any good,” he said in a recent interview, blaming some of the most divisive messaging on staffers.

So here we go again. New York City is going to elect a guy they know isn’t qualified, running on a set of ideas that never work. The result is almost certainly going to be a disaster. The buses may be free but people will stop paying for the trains as well and the cost will be far more than expected. The city run grocery stores will be a mess and the taxes to pay for all of this will not be popular. As the Post suggests, some wealthy folks may decide it’s time to give up on the city and head to Texas or Florida rather than become Mamdani’s piggy bank.

Anyway, SNL was actually funny for once. There’s a lot to laugh about for the moment.
