Mary McCartney has admitted that making her new documentary about the famous Abbey Road studios made her ‘sad’ at times as she was reminded of her late mother Linda.

Photographer Mary, 53, directs the Disney+ documentary, If These Walls Could Sing, with the film revealing the ‘untold story of the Abbey Road studio’ which is still considered ‘the heart of the music industry’.

And speaking in a new interview, Mary told how it ‘is always emotional walking in’ to the studio where pictures of her mother and father Paul performing in their band Wings still hung on the walls.

Linda McCartney died from cancer at the age of 56 in 1998, when Mary was 28-years-old.

Among the photos of the late musician and photographer and her rock star husband that feature in Abbey Road studios is one of Linda leading a pony cross the famous zebra crossing outside.

Detailing the bittersweet feeling she felt while filming in the iconic London studio, Mary told The Sun: ‘It is always emotional walking in here and reminiscing about past times. There are still pictures of Wings on the walls.

‘A lot of the people here pulled me inside and said how much “we remember your mum and how inclusive she was” and that definitely brought a tear to my eye on several occasions.

‘They’d say, “She used to come into the canteen and have a cup of tea with us and have a chat”. I love it but also it would make me sad.’

The Beatles famously recorded well into the night at the studios as they tirelessly worked on their sound.

And Mary, who was born after the group ended told how Paul’s late-night sessions discontinued as he settled into family life.

She explained how her father was ‘routine-led’ and had a ‘process’ and that his all-nighters came to an end by the time he started a family with Linda.

Mary added that although Paul sometimes came home later, he was always there when she woke up, adding that his career never ‘encroached’ family life too much.

If These Walls Could Sing was set for a global December 16 release on the streaming platform, but it had been delayed until January 6 for UK and Ireland viewers.

The story of the Abbey Road Studio features all-star interviews and intimate access to the premises and was directed by Paul’s daughter Mary.

The film is Mary’s personal love letter to a place which not only fostered her father’s creative work, but also countless numbers of the world’s most talented artists.

The documentary features all-star appearances from the likes of Elton John, Noel Gallagher and Paul McCartney, along with archival footage and session tapes.

‘These conversations, paired with vivid archive footage and session tapes, give exclusive access to these famously private studios,’ according to the film’s synopsis.

Mary told Vanity Fair of the project: ‘Abbey Road Studios have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up around the corner and have early memories of going to visit my parents while they were recording.

‘The studios felt like a family. The people who worked there had also grown up there, staying years to be trained and nurtured by the generation above them.

‘This family had also produced the music I loved; iconic, original, pioneering records that have inspired and moved me and millions of others.’
