A subtle change to how some drinks are served at McDonald’s has sparked confusion among customers – after several people noticed something missing from their order.
The fast-food giant is quietly moving away from automatically providing straws with some drinks, instead introducing specially designed lids that allow customers to sip directly from the cup.
But the change caught many customers off guard, with some initially thinking the straws had disappeared altogether.
The debate began after Melbourne mum and media personality Jacqueline Felgate shared her confusion on Instagram.
‘Just some first world problems if you can find out,’ she wrote.
‘My son went to McDonald’s in Mernda and didn’t get a straw. When he asked they said we [don’t] give out straws anymore.’
Felgate said she had experienced the same thing herself the day before.
‘I actually got McDonald’s drive-thru yesterday and I didn’t get a straw either. Is this a new policy?’

Her post quickly resonated with other customers who said they had noticed the same change at different locations.
A McDonald’s spokesperson confirmed the change to the Daily Mail, explaining that straws have not been removed completely.
‘We can confirm that straws are provided with soft drinks, shakes and frozen beverages across our restaurants,’ the spokesperson said.
‘Some drinks in our new McCafé beverage range, as well as iced McCafé drinks, are now served without a straw by default, as they have a specially designed lid that allows them to be sipped for a better customer experience.’
Customers who prefer a straw can still ask for one.
‘Customers can still request a straw at any time – which we are happy to provide.’
While the change might seem small, it quickly sparked a lively debate online.
Some people were baffled by the idea of drinking certain drinks without a straw.

‘How does one drink a thickshake?’ one person asked.
Others said the new lids felt strangely familiar.
‘The lids are ridiculous!’ another commenter wrote.
One customer said they experienced the same thing elsewhere.
‘I just experienced this at Costco. Very weird sensation drinking out of these lids. Like a kids sippy cup.’
Parents also wondered how the change might affect younger customers.
‘It’s going to be interesting watching the little ones with Happy Meals have the drinks with just the lids,’ one person wrote.
For some, the issue came down to practicality.

Is removing straws from drinks ruining the classic fast-food experience or pushing us to be more eco-friendly?
‘As a lipstick wearer, this move is diabolical,’ another commenter joked.
Not everyone was bothered by the change. Some customers said they had already adjusted by bringing their own alternatives.
‘Always have straws stashed in the car and in our bags,’ one person said.
Others suggested switching to reusable versions.
‘Just keep some reusable straws in your cars guys, not that big of a deal,’ another commenter wrote.
‘I have a metal straw because I hate paper straws,’ a woman added.
