The New York Mets have yet to make a significant splash this offseason. However, there’s still plenty of time to make a move that improves the team that failed to make the playoffs last season.

New York has added players such as Devin Williams, Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, and Luke Weaver. Nonetheless, after adding Juan Soto last offseason, those names fall short of what many expected from the Mets.

Still, if the Mets don’t want to go the free agency route for a big name, they can go to the trade market. Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta is a name in the rumor mill and is drawing interest from teams.

On the Jan. 11 edition of SNY’s “SportsNite, Anthony McCarron was presented with which team in the Big Apple needs Peralta more: the Mets or the New York Yankees.

“He’s a better fit for the Mets just because they have a greater need in their rotation, McCarron said. “I know the Yankees have some stuff going on with [Carlos] Rodón and [Gerrit] Cole not starting the season on time, but the Mets still need some ace-level quality, and that is Peralta, which is why it’s going to cost to get him.”

Mets Prospects Who Would Need to Be in a Freddy Peralta Trade

Moreover, McCarron noted the potential prospect package that the Mets would need to give up to land Peralta.

“I feel like the prospect huggers might be gathering, waiting on me there to suggest that Brandon Sproat go, as well as Jacob Reimer, a corner guy with some power, potential, who had 17 home runs across two levels last year, could get up to 25, McCarron said.

“Then Dylan Ross is the flame-throwing reliever who got up at the end of last season, didn’t get to pitch, but he’s a potential bullpen weapon, and will surely be vying for a spot in the Met pen this year. It’s a dear price to pay in terms of prospect talent, but Freddy Peralta, I mean, fifth in the Cy Young voting.”

Mets Have Troubling Outlook If No Major Moves Occur

With spring training nearing, former Mets general manager Jim Duquette shared a troubling outlook for New York if there are no other major moves on the horizon from the president of baseball operations, David Stearns. Should no move as a trade for Peralta happen between now and the start of the 2026 season.

“I don’t think they’re a postseason team yet, Duquette said on the Jan. 8 edition of “Baseball Night in New York.” “Some of the metrics, wins above replacement, have them, I think, sixth best in the league right now. If you look at their starting rotation, it doesn’t add up to me. They’re lower than ranked in that area. I think if you look at center field, objectively, left field, DH, all well below, like under 1 WAR. If you’re into that as a metric, that’s a lot of positions.

“Atlanta is pretty good. They have some question marks. Philly is really good. The Marlins are better. The Nationals are going to be better just in their own division, never mind the Central and the West. I find it hard, but I have to really squint hard to think that they’re a postseason team as they’re constructed, but I know they [have] more moves.”
