Michael Keaton is facing backlash after his recent comments about Charlie Kirk’s death were shared on social media.
Many gathered under a tweet posted by Variety on Monday to call out the “Batman” star as a “moron” for pointing out the “irony” in the conservative activist’s fatal shooting.
“This right here is why sooo many people checked out of watching anything Hollywood creates.Michael Keaton is truly a moron when you hear him speak,” one netizen wrote via X.
“3rd grade education on display again.”
“He could’ve given grace and just said the last sentence and left it at that,” another social media user tweeted.
Meanwhile, someone else said: “Charlie defended the second amendment so we’d be able to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government, not so that we could shoot people in the throat because we don’t like the things they say in debate.”
Though, it wasn’t all bad. One fan spoke up on behalf of Keaton, 76, in the comments as they urged other social media users to be kind toward everyone.
“Let’s give Michael Keaton some credit for caring that Charlie will be missed by his family. Being mean in your responses to Michael is not helpful. We become part of the problem if we speak badly to others. We all have to be aware of our behavior and be kind to others. Charlie Kirk was kind to everyone. Let’s be kind too,” the person wrote.
Reps for Keaton did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Kirk died last week after he fatally shot during one of his speaking engagements at Utah Valley University, which was one of the stops on his American Comeback Tour.
Keaton made his original comments about the Turning Point USA founder — who was a large proponent of the second amendment — during his speech at the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ 50th anniversary gala on Monday night.
“Before we start to get into the meat of this thing, I’m going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably — not probably — have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife,” he started in his speech, per Variety. “You gotta remember that.”
“Because in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable,” he continued.
Several other stars have shared their thoughts on the right-wing pundit’s death, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Amanda Seyfried and Morgan Wallen, among other names.
