A New York Yankees hat and glove
The New York Yankees have not been nearly as aggressive as their fan base would have liked to see throughout the course of the MLB offseason.
Fans were hoping to see the Yankees swing big and go all-in on competing for a World Series. However, Brian Cashman has decided to basically run it back from last year. He’s banking on players like Gerrit Cole coming back and being the missing piece from 2025.
While New York has refrained from splurging in free agency or on the trade market thus far, the team has made some quality moves.
First and foremost, Cashman was able to work out a new long-term deal with star outfielder Cody Bellinger. He was re-signed to a lucrative five-year, $162.5 million deal. The Yankees have also brought in pieces like left-hander Ryan Weathers, right-hander Angel Chivilli, and infielder Amed Rosario.
Granted, there aren’t any huge flash moves, but New York feels that it has improved this offseason. Even still, many fans have been very vocal about their displeasure.
MLB Insider Doesn’t Hold Back on New York Yankees Fans
Joel Sherman of the New York Post isn’t having the slander thrown at the Yankees over their offseason. He called out the “whiners” within the New York fan base.
“Most of the whiners are also people who were saying, ‘Well, they signed [Trent] Grisham. That means that Hal is going to get cheap and not bring Bellinger back,’” Sherman said.
“Will any of those people shut the [expletive] up now? They will not shut the [expletive] up because they like that lane that’s either stupid, or they enjoy being stupid because they get attention.”
He makes some good points with his statement. The Yankees were able to get a long-term deal done with Bellinger even though many fans felt that he would leave town after Trent Grisham decided to return to New York.
Also, no one has seen this version of the Yankees. If Cole can come back at full strength, the team would take a big step forward. When everyone is healthy, New York could very well be a championship contender.
Where Are the Yankees Projected to Finish the 2026 Season?
At the end of the day, winning baseball games is the only thing that will silence criticism.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic has revealed his opinion about where the Yankees will finish the season. He also weighed in with his thoughts about New York’s offseason.
Currently, Bowden has the Yankees predicted to finish in second place behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East division. That isn’t what fans want to hear, but that should still get the team into the postseason.
As for his grade of New York’s offseason, he gave it a “C.” No one can argue that the Yankees won the offseason, but no one should judge the team until games are being played.
