12 Years Later, Rebecca Ferguson’s Forgotten $100 Million ‘Gladiator’ Replacement Reminds Audiences It Still Exists

Rebecca Ferguson will have to wait a few more months before she rebounds in grand fashion with the third season of her Apple TV sci-fi series Silo and the third installment of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune franchise. She needs the win, with her latest film having performed poorly with critics and audiences. Ferguson starred alongside Chris Pratt in the “screenlife” mystery Mercy, in which she played an AI-powered judge. The movie was directed by “screenlife” pioneer Timur Bekmambetov, but despite its topical themes, it ended up grossing only around $55 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million. To make matters worse, Mercy holds a 25% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has shown some promise following its PVOD release a few days ago. This is happening concurrently with the streaming success of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning and another movie in which Ferguson played an important supporting role.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning marked Ferguson’s final appearance as the fan-favorite Ilsa Faust in the Mission: Impossible franchise; the movie underperformed at the box office, grossing around $570 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $290 million. Ferguson made her first appearance as the character in Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, which also marked director Christopher McQuarrie‘s debut in the franchise. It was in 2014, only a year before Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, that Ferguson starred in one of her first major films following her breakout performance in the period drama series The White Queen.

Here’s the Forgotten Rebecca Ferguson Movie Taking Down Competition on Streaming

The movie in question is Hercules, which is having something of a moment on streaming. According to FlixPatrol, it was among the most-watched titles on the global Netflix charts this week, when the leaderboard was topped by the Indian psychological thriller film Accused. Released in 2014, Hercules was headlined by Dwayne Johnson and directed by the disgraced Brett Ratner, who recently made a comeback to Hollywood with the Melania Trump documentary. Hercules earned mixed reviews and grossed a little under $250 million against a reported budget of $100 million. It’s now sitting at a 58% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Hercules has Brett Ratner behind the cameras and Dwayne Johnson rocking the loincloth — and delivers exactly what any reasonable person reading that description might expect.” You can watch Hercules at home.
