From Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith to Christopher Nolan‘s first installment in his popular Dark Knight trilogy, Batman Begins, 2005 was packed with many memorable movies that we now celebrate on their 20th anniversary. However, one movie that failed to make much of an impactful splash back in 2005, despite boasting a strong central cast, is Four Brothers, directed by the late John Singleton. Thankfully, on its 20th anniversary, viewers can’t get enough, with Four Brothers finally finding some streaming success all these years later.
At the time of writing, Four Brothers is the most-streamed movie on Pluto TV in the U.S. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Bobby, alongside the rest of his four brothers: Angel (Tyrese Gibson), Jeremiah (André Benjamin), and Jack (Garrett Hedlund). Brought back together following the tragic murder of their adoptive mother, Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan), the siblings look to piece together the puzzle behind her demise and will stop at nothing to find answers, even if it means being chased by local beat cops.
Four Brothers only received 53% from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critical consensus reading, “Despite striking a believable rapport among its principal actors, Four Brothers overwhelms with ultra-violent, vigilante-glorifying action and devolves into too many fractured, insubstantial thematic directions.” Nevertheless, audiences warmed to the movie and disagreed with critics by awarding it an impressive 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of release, this was Wahlberg’s joint-highest audience rating on the site since Paul Thomas Anderson‘s breakthrough film, Boogie Nights, in 1997.
How Did ‘Four Brothers’ Perform at the Box Office?
Produced for a reported $30 million, Four Brothers was a success at the 2005 box office, tripling this investment with a global total of $92.4 million. Split between a domestic haul of $74.4 million and a further $18 million from overseas markets, the film is the third-highest-grossing movie in the career of its brilliant director Singleton, with only 2000’s Shaft and 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious earning more. When Four Brothers debuted on the weekend of August 12, 2005, it finished at the top of the domestic box office rankings, despite facing competition from the likes of The Skeleton Key, the hilarious Wedding Crashers, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Four Brothers is available to stream now on Pluto TV. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates from the world of streaming.
