1

Directed by Robin Wright and Andrea Harkin, The Girlfriend is a psychological thriller miniseries adapted from Michelle Frances‘ 2017 novel. Wright stars in the show as Laura, a mother who grows suspicious of her son Daniel’s (Laurie Davidson) new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke), and becomes determined to uncover the truth about her past, no matter the consequences. The series also features Waleed Zuaiter, Tanya Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, and more in supporting roles.

All six episodes of The Girlfriend were released on Prime Video on September 10, 2025, to a generally positive critical reception, earning praise for its twisty story and the performances of its leads. While the show’s plot is not without its flaws, Wright and Cooke’s antagonistic performances are what carry you through the experience, keeping things interesting even when the story itself isn’t all that solid. It’s a soapy and entertaining exploration of love, greed, power, and the psychologically complex relationship between a mother and her son’s chosen partner.

‘Countdown’ (2025 – Present)

Created and written by Derek Haas, Countdown is a crime drama series that follows the investigation into the murder of a Department of Homeland Security officer. Starring Jensen Ackles as LAPD detective Mark Meachum, the show follows a multi-department task force of undercover agents as they track the murderer, uncovering a much larger conspiracy in the process. Besides Ackles, the series also stars Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight, Uli Latukefu, and Eric Dane in lead roles.

Though it had rather mixed reviews when it premiered on Prime Video in June 2025, Countdown is an entertaining old-school crime show that has proven quite popular with audiences. Driven by the strong performances of its stars, especially that of Ackles in the lead role, it’s a familiar but fascinating thriller. Sure, many of the plotlines are derivative and tropey, but it’s still an effective entertainer that’s perfect for fans of classic crime procedurals.

‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ (2024 – Present)

Inspired by the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a spy action series created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. The first season follows the story of two strangers (Glover and Maya Erskine) who become spies for a mysterious organization, going undercover as a married couple. Following a procedural format, each episode of the series follows a new mission, with a star-studded guest cast that includes Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Wagner Moura, and more. A second season, starring Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher, was in the works before being put on pause.

Considering how popular the 2005 movie still is among audiences, expectations were high ahead of the show’s premiere, and those expectations were rewarded when the show debuted to record-high viewership in 2024. It’s a completely original take, retaining just the name and some of the themes of the film, and its effective writing, explosive action, and electric chemistry make it one of the best shows we’ve seen in recent years. The series is also a great showcase of the work of its co-creator, Francesca Sloane, who is also set to be a writer and executive producer on the much-awaited Big Little Lies Season 3.
