From Alien: Earth to It: Welcome to Derry, 2025’s best new horror shows offered viewers something from every side of the versatile genre. Some classic horror shows blended sci-fi and mystery elements into their scary stories to make them more palatable. These seminal series, such as The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, helped make horror mainstream.
As a result, TV creators now have a lot more freedom when it comes to the genre. The success of mega hits like American Horror Story and The Walking Dead made horror TV mainstream, and now every year sees new horror shows hit the streaming services. Some are instant classics, while others are forgettable duds.
However, even the most disappointing shows have one thing going for them, and that is variety. As evidenced by a look back on the best new horror shows of 2025, the genre runs the gamut in terms of tone and content. There are classic horror shows that are hilarious, heartbreaking, and terrifying, and their stories can be grounded or supernatural.

Dexter: Resurrection
The continued survival of the Dexter franchise is an impressive achievement in its own right, but what is truly astounding is the show’s ability to bounce back from what seems like certain death. Like its titular antihero, the Dexter franchise has seemingly left itself with nowhere to go more than once, only to unexpectedly redeem itself with a new outing.
When Dexter: New Blood’s ending came around, viewers were fairly done with Michael C Hall’s infamous killer of serial killers. The original Dexter finale was infamously awful, and, while Dexter: New Blood was an improvement, it was still a relief when the show seemingly ended with Dexter’s unambiguous demise.
However, shortly after the prequel Dexter: Original Sin proved a hit in early 2025, the original show was brought back with the accurately titled Dexter: Resurrection. Although this reboot should have felt tired and desperate, the arrival of franchise newcomers like Peter Dinklage and Uma Thurman instantly elevated the project.

The Bondsman
While Dexter: Resurrection’s star power was a big part of the franchise’s critical revival, The Bondsman only needed one name to succeed. Years after his proposed Tremors TV show wasn’t picked up despite fan enthusiasm, Kevin Bacon returned to small-screen comedy horror in the title role of this Amazon Prime show.
The plot of The Bondsman follows Bacon’s Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who comes back from the dead only to discover that he is now stuck working as a demon slayer. Effectively still a bail bondsman, Hub is now hunting the undead denizens of hell that have escaped to earth instead of criminals.
This killer premise allows Bacon to have a lot of fun in a silly, charming, and gory splat-stick adventure that calls to mind Ash Vs Evil Dead. Never taking itself too seriously, The Bondsman is an endearing and gruesome good time that deserved better than the show’s swift cancellation.

Alien: Earth
Two iconic horror franchises arrived on the small screen for the first time in 2025, and Alien: Earth had the misfortune of debuting first. From the mind of Fargo’s Noah Hawley, this prequel to 1979’s Alien starred Sydney Chandler as Wendy, a synthetic hybrid with a human consciousness and a robotic body.
Although Alien: Earth season 1’s complex story finally delved deep into the previously unexplained lore underpinning Ridley Scott’s iconic franchise, this never came at the expense of the show’s characters. Wendy and the “Lost Boys” are as compelling as they are tragic, and their story is a harrowing, tense, and terrifying one.
The group is brought face to face with the Xenomorph thanks to the shady machinations of Weyland Yutani as Hawley’s show brings the franchise’s ambitious, immersive sci-fi style to the small screen without sacrificing any of its scare factor. Brutal and unpredictable, Alien: Earth still finds time for moments of sweetness and humanity.
In almost any other year, this standout series would comfortably claim the title of the year’s best new horror show. However, a few weeks after Alien: Earth, another famous horror franchise found its way to the small screen after a long wait.

It: Welcome to Derry
Although Alien: Earth is great, Pennywise’s return in It: Welcome to Derry is the best horror TV show of 2025, and arguably the best new horror project of the year, too. Like director Andy Muschietti’s earlier It movies, It: Welcome to Derry blends coming-of-age dramedy with fast-paced chills in its small town horror story.
However, It: Welcome to Derry’s historic setting and longer runtime allows the show to explore the titular setting in more depth, bringing Stephen King’s infamously evil town to life in vivid detail. The show’s young heroes are sweet, and its deaths are bracingly brutal, but it’s the sheer scope of It: Welcome to Derry that truly wows.
Like a blend of Twin Peaks and the original It movies, this prequel expands the franchise’s fictional world without losing sight of those all-important scares. Thus, even in a year that offered a stellar sci-fi horror show in Alien: Earth, a genuinely funny horror comedy romp, and an unlikely resurrection of an old favorite, It: Welcome to Derry stands out as the year’s best new horror show.
