7 Years Later, Josh Brolin Gives an Update on Taylor Sheridan's Long-Awaited ‘Sicario 3’

The Sicario film series from the brilliant Taylor Sheridan is undeniably one of the most intriguing crime thrillers of the century, loved by both fans and critics alike. The franchise is expected to continue with a third installment, which has reportedly been in the works for years, with no promising update on a release date. Josh Brolin, who stars in the first two films, 2015’s Sicario and 2018’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado, hinted back in August that Sicario 3 was moving forward. Now, he’s back with another update, opening up about the film’s status.

In 2022, Brolin himself mentioned that the new Sicario film had been written and rewritten, and later in 2023, Sicario producers, Molly Smith and Thad Luckinbill, revealed that “it was practically right around the corner.” But the waiting game is still ongoing, as Brolin said in a recent interview:

“It’s just a really big corner. There’s a very small ratio on the steering wheel. At one point, I said, ‘I don’t think there’s going to be a Sicario 3. I doubt it’s going to happen.’ And then there was all this [commotion]. Molly, Thad and Trent [Luckinbill] came out and said something. So I also keep hearing that it’s right around the corner. I know it’s there. When we do it, I don’t know when that is, but I know it’s there. So I’m excited about the prospect of it, but you can’t wait too long because we’ll have walkers.

Josh Brolin Didn’t Believe a ‘Sicario 3’ Would Happen

Earlier in August, Brolin confirmed that the third Sicario movie is “very, very real” with Sheridan back at work writing the threequel. At the time, the Weapons actor admitted he never believed the project would happen, but then the producers showed up, changing his mind. He also added, “And I just heard recently that it’s very, very real. So, cool.” Both Sicario movies see Brolin portray CIA operative Matt Graver, whose return fans are still looking forward to in Sicario 3, even though it’s been about seven years since the second installment was released. Reportedly titled Sicario: Capos, Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie was confirmed to be involved in the upcoming movie in late October 2023, with producers saying the script was nearly complete.

Neither has been confirmed as of this writing, but follow Collider for the latest Sicario updates.
