8 Years Later, This Sci-Fi Cyberpunk Movie Becomes A Streaming Sensation & It's Worth Watching

One of the biggest Sci-Fi movies of the last few years has found new life on streaming, and it is totally worth watching years later for a few key reasons. 2026’s Sci-Fi movies include projects like Chris Pratt’s Mercy and the return of popular Sci-Fi movie franchises like Star Wars and Dune. However, one film is exciting due to its mysterious nature.

That would be Disclosure Day, which is helmed by one of Hollywood’s biggest directors and one of the genre’s best, Steven Spielberg. The director was also behind a Sci-Fi movie that tapped into the cyberpunk genre and many popular franchises. That film has resurged on streaming after eight years, and Sci-Fi fans should absolutely check it out or rewatch the film.

A Sci-Fi Cyberpunk Movie Has Resurged On Streaming

Ready Player One was released in theaters on March 29, 2018. The Sci-Fi movie is based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name, telling the story of a young man, Wade Watts, who controls an avatar in an interconnected digital world, OASIS, to find clues left by its creator, James Halliday, to gain control of the world and a great fortune.

Ready Player One finished its worldwide box office run with $583.5 million, becoming a major hit. Eight years after the movie’s successful run in theaters, the Sci-Fi movie has now resurged on streaming. At the time of writing, Ready Player One is the 9th most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States. More viewers are discovering the film.

Why Ready Player One Is Worth Watching On Prime Video

For those who have not watched Ready Player One, I highly recommend giving Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi epic a go. After all, one can’t really go wrong when it comes to the pairing of the director and the Sci-Fi genre. Additionally, Ready Player One’s cast includes names like Fox X-Men’s Tye Sheridan and Slow Horses & House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke in main roles.

Their characters, Wade Watts and Samantha Cook, have amazing chemistry. The story perfectly uses cyberpunk elements like a bleak future, a greedy high-tech corporation that the players stand against, neon-soaked landscapes, and a fake reality being looked at as better than the real, dystopic future. Additionally, the virtual world makes for the perfect land for crossovers between popular franchises.

DC, Mortal Kombat, Back to the Future, The Iron Giant, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings, and many other popular pop culture franchises and movies are meshed into the narrative, with characters, vehicles, and equipment appearing. After Spielberg claimed in March 2024 that a Ready Player One sequel is still in the works, the time is perfect for new viewers to check out the Sci-Fi cyberpunk adventure.
