Summary
- Barbie included a Helen Mirren post-credits scene in the IMAX release, showing Midge giving birth to her baby.
- Will Ferrell’s improvisation in the film resulted in many scenes being cut, leaving room for a potential blooper reel in the future.
- A kiss scene between Barbie and Ken was cut, highlighting Barbie’s disinterest in Ken and serving the plot.
Barbie is an hour and fifty-four minutes of movie perfection, but several potentially great scenes didn’t make the cut. Since the film’s theatrical release, the talent behind Barbie has revealed moments they wish could have made it into the film, and one such scene was added back in for the IMAX release. Ultimately, it’s no surprise that there were too many excellent moments shot or conceived to include in the movie. With actors like Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Farrell, Kate McKinnon, and more bringing their comedy genius before the camera, director Greta Gerwig would have had a whole lot of footage to work with.
As the top movie of 2023, Barbie has proven that Gerwig made the right choices regarding what to keep and what to cut. The included scenes perfectly balanced heart and comedy while still creating a compelling social commentary. Still, given the excellent writing and the improvisational skills of the cast, it would be great to see a collection of all the Barbie scenes that didn’t make it into the film one day. For now, fans of the 2023 hit can enjoy (or lament) the scenes that Warner Bros, Gerwig, and others confirmed almost made it into the film.
The Barbie Movie Cast & Character Guide
Led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the Barbie movie’s cast is full of A-list actors playing either toy-based characters or original creations.
9 Barbie Deleted (& Then Re-Added) Its Post-Credits Scene
The IMAX run of Barbie included a Helen Mirren post-credits scene.
With Barbie‘s IMAX release came a brand new post-credits scene, which hadn’t been included in the original cut. This created an incentive (if anyone needed it) to go see the film again on the biggest of big screens. The scene saw narrator Helen Mirren (who was never shown in Barbie‘s original version) walk in on Midge, Barbie’s discontinued pregnant friend, finally giving birth to her baby. It’s possible that this scene was always intended for the IMAX run. Or, perhaps Gerwig changed her mind about not including it to begin with.
8 Barbie Cut Helen Mirren’s F-Bomb
Helen Mirren was given an F-bomb on the first page of the Barbie script.
Gerwig has mentioned in interviews that there are several moments she was forced to cut from Barbie, despite them being among her favorite scenes. An example is a line from narrator Helen Mirren, which would have used up the PG-13 Barbie‘s f-bomb allowance. On the very first page of the script, Mirren was meant to say, “Pipe the f-ck down, Marie Curie!” (addressing the historic chemist and physicist), which was among Gerwig’s favorite lines in the movie. Unfortunately, since this meant no one could say the f-word for the rest of Barbie, she decided to cut it.
7 Ken Fought A Bear In A Barbie Deleted Scene
There wasn’t room in the leaving-Barbieland montage for Ken’s bear fight.
Another scene that didn’t make it into the movie, shared by Barbie film editor Nick Huoy, would have seen Gosling’s Ken throw-down with a bear. This was meant to occur during the montage of Ken and Barbie making their way from Barbieland to the real world, but apparently, there wasn’t time for it. It can be assumed the Ken vs. bear match would have happened during the brief camping scene, which featured a 2D forest background and Barbie’s classic camper van.
6 A Lot Of Will Ferrell Improvisation Didn’t Make The Cut In Barbie
Will Ferrell ran wild with his lines in Barbie.
Will Ferrell hilariously played the Mattel CEO in Barbie, and it’s no surprise that a good deal of his part was the actor’s own improvisation. It’s a skill Ferrell is known for, which meant all Gerwig needed to do was keep the camera rolling, sift through footage, and choose what she wanted to keep. According to an interview with Barbie cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (via Variety), plenty of Ferrell footage didn’t make the cut, noting that “he just came up with the craziest stuff.” Hopefully, as Prieto has suggested, the Barbie team will release a bloopers reel one day so audiences can see for themselves.
5 A Barbie & Ken Kiss Scene Didn’t Make The Barbie Movie
Barbie & Ken nearly kissed in the Barbie movie.
Barbie smartly avoided a romance plot between the titular character and Gosling’s Ken, so we never see the pair share a real kiss. Robbie told People that this is a significant regret of hers, with many of her friends stating that there was something wrong with her for not taking an opportunity to kiss Gosling. Still, Robbie’s costar explained that there had originally been a scene in which they were meant to kiss, and the team had to discuss how these two toys would go about making that happen. Ultimately, it was probably the right move that this was cut since Barbie not being into Ken was a significant part of the plot.
4 Ken’s Screams Of Terror Didn’t Make The Rollerblade Scene
A candid video reveals that Ken originally screamed during Barbie’s big punch.
When Barbie first arrived in the human world with Ken (wearing their neon and rollerblades), she was disturbed to see how many men were ogling her, and this ultimately led to a moment in which she punched someone who had grabbed her inappropriately. The scene was great on its own, but a video on Twitter has revealed that in a version that didn’t make it to the film, Gosling’s Ken shrieked in terror when Barbie delivered her big punch. The video also shows Gosling struggling to keep himself from laughing after a comically dramatic scream, which may explain why they nixed this reaction for Barbie‘s final cut.
3 Michael Cera’s Allan Had A Jaws Tribute That Was Cut
Barbie cut Michael Cera’s big Jaws reference during the beach scene.
Barbie cleverly threw in several Easter eggs referencing other iconic movies (like Stephen King’s The Shining), but apparently, a tribute to Jaws didn’t make it into the film’s final version. In his interview with Variety, cinematographer Prieto also shared that they had filmed a moment during Barbie‘s beach scene (when Gosling’s Ken goes flying after hitting the plastic water) in which Barbieland’s police officer sees someone getting eaten in the water. Prieto did a push-in on Michael Cera’s horrified face, and Gerwig reportedly found the parody moment so funny that she asked the filming assistant to keep replaying it.
2 There’s Evidence Of A Cut Ken & Weird Barbie Pool Scene
A set photo sees Ken & Weird Barbie getting cozy in the pool.
Though it has not been addressed by Gerwig or the other creatives responsible for Barbie, an image has been circulating Twitter of Gosling’s Ken and McKinnon’s Weird Barbie lounging in a pool together. The picture taken from the set shows Gerwig cracking up from behind the camera, with Weird Barbie sitting on a floaty with Ken across her lap. There’s nothing like this in the Barbie movie, so whatever was supposed to be happening here must have been cut. Since the image was released, many have speculated that, after moving on from Babrie, Ken might have started a romance with Weird Barbie (a pairing that just might have worked).
1 The Barbie Movie Originally Featured A Fart Opera Scene
A massive fart joke nearly made it into the final cut of Barbie.
Barbie has a phenomenal soundtrack, between Billy Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” and Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” songs, but there was supposed to be another musical number that just missed the cut. Gerwig revealed in IndieWire‘s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast (via Teen Vogue) that they had filmed and edited an entire “Fart Opera,” which would have taken place about halfway through Barbie. It very nearly made the final cut but didn’t perform well with the last batch of test audiences, so it was removed. Since this massive fart joke was so close to being a part of Barbie, it can be hoped that audiences will someday get a chance to see it.
