It feels like every time we talk about Batman lately it’s about the movies that aren’t here yet — Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II is still a ways off, James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold hasn’t even rolled cameras, and fans have been wondering when the Dark Knight will actually return to screens in a real way, but the truth is you won’t have to wait much longer because a brand-new animated Batman film is right around the corner.
Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires — also called Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios — comes out in Mexican theaters on September 18, 2025, and then just a day later it’ll hit HBO Max on September 19, 2025, so the wait is basically nothing at this point.
What Is ‘Aztec Batman’ About?
This isn’t your typical Gotham-set story about Bruce Wayne beating up muggers in alleys, this is an Elseworlds tale that drops the Dark Knight right into the middle of the Aztec empire and asks the question of what Batman would be like if he was born into a totally different time and place, which is something DC’s been doing for decades in the comics with titles like Gotham by Gaslight or Batman: Gotham Noir, and now they’re finally doing it on this scale with animation.
The trailers that dropped in July and August gave fans a look at the darker and bloodier vibe the movie’s going for, and it’s clear this isn’t just another family-friendly animated flick but something that’s leaning into myth and history and all the brutality that comes with it, which already makes it stand apart from what we’ve seen before.
So if you’ve been craving a new take on the Dark Knight — one that isn’t tied to Gotham City, Joker, or the same rogues gallery we’ve seen a million times — this is going to be worth checking out.
Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires will hit HBO Max on September 19, 2025.
