After a Disastrous Box Office Run, Margot Robbie’s Romantic Fantasy Debuts at Home

History repeated itself for Sony this year, when A Big Bold Beautiful Journey bombed at the box office. The high-concept drama arrived in theaters mere months after the studio’s similarly ambitious Here, which united the cast, director, and several key department heads of Forrest Gump. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, on the other hand, served as star Margot Robbie‘s grand follow-up to Barbie, which grossed over $1.3 billion a couple of years ago. However, the movie barely survived two weeks in theaters, and is already available on PVOD platforms.

Besides Robbie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey features Colin Farrell, who had been having quite a successful run himself. The film appears to have concluded its run with just $20 million at the worldwide box office, against a reported budget of $50 million. Of this $20 million haul, only $6.6 million came from domestic theaters. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey lost a resounding 93% of its theater-count in its third week, dropping from more than 3,300 domestic locations to just 609. The film grossed just $74,000 in its third weekend, marking one of the biggest drops ever for a wide release.

Directed by Kogonada, who previously worked with Farrell on the science-fiction film After Yang, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey opened to mixed reviews. It appears to have settled at a 37% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Too solemn to have much fun with its high concept while also too saccharine for its wistful themes to resonate, this well-meaning odyssey never quite lives up to its title.”

Margot Robbie Will Next Star in ‘Wuthering Heights’

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey grossed more than Here at the global box office, although this is hardly a victory. Also produced for around $50 million, director Robert Zemeckis‘ reunion with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright made just $16 million globally. Robbie will now focus all her energy on taking her big 2026 release, Wuthering Heights. Also starring Jacob Elordi, the romance movie will debut in February. You can now watch A Big Bold Beautiful Journey at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
