The Batman Part II is one of the most anticipated films of 2027, and for good reason. It won’t just see Matt Reeves returning to the director’s chair and Robert Pattinson once again donning the Dark Knight’s cape; it’s part of a year packed with major superhero movies like Man of Tomorrow, Avengers: Secret Wars, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Fans are already clamoring for a certain character to appear in The Batman Part II — Dick Grayson, aka Robin. More to the point, they feel that Owen Cooper, the breakout star of Netflix’s hit drama Adolescence, would be a perfect fit for the character. Adolescence was a major winner at this year’s Emmy Awards, walking away with some of the night’s most coveted trophies, and it’s all due to Cooper’s performance that showcases the necessary ingredients for Robin.
Owen Cooper Is The Reason ‘Adolescence’ Works
From the jump, it’s clear that Adolescence co-creators Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne don’t intend to pull any punches. The opening features Cooper’s Jamie Miller being pulled from his bed and arrested due to his potential connection with a murder. Things only spiral from there, thanks to Cooper’s intense performance. In the first episode, he plays Jamie as a scared kid, which makes the huge reveal that he stabbed one of his classmates to death hit all the harder. So does the penultimate episode, as Jamie slowly reveals how online radicalization led him to commit such a horrific act. Adolescence‘s secret weapon isn’t in the single-shot episodes but in Cooper’s immensely layered performance, and it’s that kind of approach that could make him a great Robin. Dick Grayson often buries the trauma he suffered as a child under a bright and cheerful persona, which serves as a mirror image to the chilling transformation Cooper undergoes in Adolescence.
It turns out that Matt Reeves is also a major fan of Adolescence. During the Emmys’ red carpet ceremony, he briefly discussed The Batman Part II while also mentioning the profound effect that Adolescence had on him. “I was talking to some of the people at Plan B, and I was just telling them how blown away I was by ‘Adolescence.’ That show really got to me. I was really affected,” Reeves said. Plan B refers to Brad Pitt‘s production company, which has a production deal with Warner Bros. similar to the one that Reeves’ 6th and Idaho banner has with DC Studios; it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Reeves to reach out and contact Cooper if he has plans for Robin in his Batman Epic Crime Saga.
If Owen Cooper Plays Robin, ‘The Batman Part II’ Should Introduce These Batman Villains
Details about The Batman Part II are relatively scarce, but Matt Reeves recently revealed that it’ll feature a villain that hasn’t appeared in a Batman film. There’s actually a group of villains that fits the description and serves as a perfect way to fold Robin into the story: the Court of Owls. First appearing in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo‘s Batman run, the Court of Owls is a secretive society that’s been a part of Gotham City’s history, and Batman comes into conflict with them when he uncovers a plot to murder Gotham’s elites. In the process, he learns that the Court originally intended to train Dick Grayson as one of their warriors before his parents were murdered. That’s a perfect setup for a movie, and could showcase how similar Batman and Robin are while also reminding viewers why their dynamic is one of the best in comic history.
Adding Robin to The Batman Part II would also continue a trend where the Boy Wonder plays a key part in certain projects. Not only will Batman: Brave and the Bold feature the Dark Knight coming face to face with his son Damian Wayne, but the upcoming Dynamic Duo will see Dick Grayson and Jason Todd joining forces. Warner Bros. and DC Studios are clearly putting the failure of Batman and Robin behind them and seem ready to embrace the idea of Robin, and Owen Cooper has the right skills to bring the Boy Wonder to life.
The Batman Part II premieres in theaters on October 2027.
