Alec Baldwin Joins MCU Star's Mysterious New Crime Movie

Alec Baldwin has been keeping a lower profile in recent years, so this latest casting update is a pretty notable one. The Oscar-nominated actor is officially stepping into a high-profile new feature alongside one of Marvel’s biggest stars, with cameras set to roll very soon. It also puts him into a project that already had a strong cast and a very interesting premise working in its favor. For Baldwin, it’s the kind of announcement that’s bound to get attention on its own.

According to a new report, Baldwin has joined Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, and Zazie Beetz in Kockroach, a New York-set crime movie from Captain Fantastic director Matt Ross. Filming is due to begin in April. The project is being produced by Andrew Lazar and Christina Weiss Lurie, with Black Bear handling international sales alongside CAA Media Finance and Range Select on domestic rights.

Based on the William Lashner novel — which itself is a re-imagining of Franz Kafka‘s 1915 novella, The Metamorphosis Kockroach tells the story of a mysterious stranger who takes on New York’s criminal underworld and slowly transforms himself into a larger-than-life crime boss in a city where power means everything. It’s a strange, darkly comic setup that has already attracted a lot of attention thanks to the cast alone, and Ross is directing from a screenplay by Jonathan Ames, with revisions by Ross himself.

Remembering the Icons of Film — Collider Movie Quiz

We pay tribute to the talents who helped define Hollywood.

What Happened to Alec Baldwin?

In 2021, while filming the Western Rust, a revolver that Baldwin was handling discharged a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The case led to years of criminal and civil litigation. Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but in 2024, the judge involved in the case dismissed it with prejudice, meaning that specific criminal charge could not be brought again in that case, after finding prosecutors and police had withheld evidence about the ammunition.

Separately, the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, sentenced to 18 months, and later released under supervision. Baldwin later sued New Mexico officials over what he called a malicious prosecution, but that lawsuit was dismissed in 2025 as it wasn’t followed up on, although it could be refiled.
