Hulu’s new sci-fi masterpiece has just been launched as one of the streamer’s most successful original shows ever, and it has already become the most-watched show in the world. Alien: Earth just premiered on August 12, and already holds a 96% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show is created by Noah Hawley, and serves as a prequel to the first film.
Alien: Earth stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, and Timothy Olyphant, among others. The show takes place only two years prior to the events of the film that started it all, and follows Wendy, the first cross between human and synthetic being, as she joins a group of soldiers investigating a space vessel crash on Earth.
Currently, Alien Earth is the number 1 show on Hulu/Disney+ in the US, Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, and about 70 other countries. The show is currently FX’s most-watched series, and the #128 most-watched show in the US overall. The series’ success is not unprecedented, since there has been a lot of hype around the show.
What This Means For The Alien Franchise
Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley has discussed wanting to continue the series if the show gained the right audience. Hawley has called the first season of Alien: Earth a proof of concept of sorts for a much bigger story arc. He also once revealed that he could foresee himself working on Alien: Earth for 10 years.
While Alien: Earth is the franchise’s first TV series, there are nine films total, including four considered the original films, two crossover films, two prequels, and one spinoff.
Now that the show has catapulted to success after the release of Alien: Earth‘s first two episodes, it feels likely that Hawley will be able to continue working on the sci-fi horror series. There is a sequel to the film Alien: Romulus currently in development with Fede Álvarez attached to helm, but while that is still in the Alien universe, it remains a separate entity to Alien: Earth.
Our Take On Alien: Earth’s Success
The Alien franchise is one of the most iconic sci-fi properties of all time, and it always remains popular. Therefore, it is unsurprising that Alien: Earth has already taken audiences by storm. The series still has six more episodes to air, but without a doubt, this show’s success will continue to grow.
Alien: Earth has great source material, a talented ensemble cast, and an innovative concept that takes the franchise to Earth for the first time, making it a no-brainer that Alien: Earth would be successful. Only time will tell if the show gets renewed for a second season, but right now, that decision seems fairly obvious.
