Ever since Andrew Garfield’s Marvel return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it has refueled the public interest to see The Amazing Spider-Man 3 finally get made by Sony. While debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, many have been continuing to ask to see the British star get his third unmade film.
During a new interview with GQ, Garfield was replying ot a fan if it was true that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was happening. However, the 42-year-old actor made it clear, “It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen.”
The third installment was initially slated for June 10, 2016, while a fourth one was also being planned for May 4, 2018. Marc Webb, who helmed the first two entries, was going to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3, eying it as his last one.
While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made $716.9 million at the worldwide box office, the critical reception for the sequel was mixed, as Sony was using the film to set up multiple spinoff projects in the franchise, including a Sinister Six movie. The Sony hack in 2014 also complicated things for the third outing.
Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was cancelled when it was announced that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios had come to an agreement to use Spider-Man in the MCU, which was revealed on February 9, 2015. Tom Holland became the next iteration of the web-crawler, who has not only headlined his own trilogy, but is working on his fourth film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
While not getting this trilogy completed, Garfield got to star alongside Holland and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has become the biggest box office hit in The Multiverse Saga. His 2021 appearance has left the door open for him to come back in the MCU.
Garfield has denied that Spider-Man is in Avengers: Doomsday, revealing in the same interview with GQ that he and Maguire are not showing up. Principal photography on the Phase 6 installment, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, wrapped on September 19, 2025.
However, when speaking to MTV on October 7, 2025, Garfield remained tight-lipped about Spider-Man being in Avengers: Secret Wars, with The Multiverse Saga finally having not started shooting yet. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 may not happen anytime soon, but Garfield’s Marvel future doesn’t seem to be over just yet.
