Andy Muschietti Optimistic About His Long-Simmering Batman DCU Movie: "The Intention Is Yes"

While DC Studios is still working on The Brave and The Bold film, the DC Universe project has finally received the most exciting update yet. The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate has been taking longer than expected with its Batman reimagination, as Bruce Wayne is set to appear in James Gunn’s new superhero franchise.

During a new interview with Variety, the film’s director, Andy Muschietti, and his sister/producer Barbara Muschietti were asked about any updates on their Batman reboot. While his sibling said, “The intention is yes, but we can’t talk about it,” regarding the movie still happening, her brother stated, “We have to wait a few, a couple of months to start talking about it.”

However, that comment alone made him realize that “I screwed it already.” As the reboot was revealed on January 31, 2023, by DC Studios, Muschietti was tapped to helm The Brave and the Bold on June 15, 2023, only a month before his The Flash movie was released in theaters.

A writer is currently working on the script for The Brave and The Bold movie, although who it is remains unclear, as Gunn has not named them. The DC Studios co-CEO has stated multiple times that a project doesn’t go forward at DC Studios until a screenplay has been finalized. In an interview with IGN on September 26, 2025, Gunn stressed that the Batman movie story with Robin has evolved since the initial announcement. The Man of Tomorrow filmmaker confirmed, “Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff.”

The DCU also has another Batman-related installment in the same franchise, with the Clayface movie, which is currently filming and will be arriving on September 11, 2026. Directed by James Watkins, the R-rated horror flick centers on DC’s Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harris, and his transformation into the famous shape-shifter.

With the new take on the Dark Knight for the main DC movie continuity, there is also Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II that is in the works. Production is set to begin in 2026 and will hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

An actor has yet to be cast as the next Caped Crusader, but the character has appeared through an animated cameo in Gunn’s Creature Commandos. While Muschietti’s entry is one of many upcoming DCU movies for DC Studios, no release date has been set yet for The Brave and The Bold.
