Callum Turner’s Forgotten 96% Thriller Series Is One of the Most Underrated Shows of the Past Decade

While Callum Turner is making headlines due to his engagement to Dua Lipa, he’s a genuinely talented actor in his own right and his body of work proves it. Not only is Turner an integral part of the phenomenal Masters of the Air, but he’s also slated to have a major role in A24’s supernatural romance Eternity alongside Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller. Turner’s best role was in the first season of The Capture, the critically-acclaimed series that’s available to stream on Peacock.

The Capture follows Turner’s Shaun Emery, a former soldier who is arrested after video footage shows him assaulting, then kidnapping his lawyer Hannah Roberts (Laura Haddock). The only issue is that Emery claims the footage is faked. Detective Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) starts investigating Emery, uncovering a massive conspiracy in the process. While The Capture might have flown under people’s radars, it’s a compelling thriller that deserves to be seen.

‘The Capture’ Dives Deep Into The Misuse of Technology

In Series 1 of The Capture, it’s revealed that Emery was innocent: the footage implicating him was manipulated, while Roberts is still alive as part of the larger conspiracy. This issue would return in Series 2, with politician Isaac Turner (Paapa Essiedu) targeted via deepfake technology. In a day and age where deepfakes and AI are becoming more ingrained into the technology we use, The Capture paints a chilling picture, showcasing that technology should be used with caution rather than malice.

The Capture also features an incredible cast; in addition to Turner and Grainger, Series 1 features Ron Perlman, Famke Janssen and Ralph Ineson in major roles. Turner is still the major draw, as he gives Emery plenty of layers. Prior to the events of The Capture, he served a tour of duty in Afghanistan, where he was imprisoned for supposedly killing an insurgent due to implicating video footage. This backstory helps explain why Emery is so dogged in proving his innocence; having been framed once, he’s not eager to repeat the process.

Emery is also dealing with the scars of war in addition to becoming a fugitive, which leads to explosive bursts of anger. What makes these moments so tense is that they’re unexpected, but it also feels like Turner is genuinely angry — at the world, at the law, and at himself. That level of dedication to the craft makes Turner one of the more interesting actors working today, and he definitely deserves more credit than he gets. So does Graniger, who has to play a police officer coming to germs with the gray areas of the legal system.

‘The Capture Will Return For Season 3

The Capture recieved universal acclaim when it first debuted, with Series 1 racking up an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Multiple reviews applauded the show for its gripping take on the modern era of surveillance, with The Guardian even labeling it “one of the most cleverly plotted dramas of recent years”. Series 2 would recieve even more praise, including a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Grainiger recently revealed that The Capture is slated to return for a third season, praising the scripts and saying that “Ben Chanan’s scripts are as electrifying as ever.” She’ll also be joined by cast members old and new, including her Strike co-star Killian Scott. Given the advances that technology’s taken since its premiere, The Capture has the potential to reel in a major audience, and touch on some very timely topics. It also means that the series could finally get the respect it deserves, and so would Callum Turner if he returns as Shaun Emery.

The Capture is available to stream on Peacock.
