Chris Hemsworth faces down extreme physical trials in his National Geographic docuseries Limitless, which returns for a second season this week, from fasting and freezing plunges to being pepper sprayed and even electrocuted.
But in chatting with me for our Limitless: Live Better Now cover story, the actor revealed that his toughest challenge was not any of the stunts, it was stepping onstage with Ed Sheeran in front of a massive stadium crowd.
Hemsworth admitted to me that the key sequence of episode 1 (“Brain Power“) of season 2 of the re-titled Limitless season 2 presented the greatest challenge out of everything he experienced over two years of shooting across six countries:
“I’d say playing drums in front of 70,000 people with Ed Sheeran in Bucharest was probably the toughest, although I never want to get pepper sprayed again.”

While the Marvel star who brought Thor to life on the big screen is known for embracing grueling training and endurance challenges, the thought of keeping rhythm with Sheeran during a live show pushed him far out of his comfort zone:
“I can do intense training, extreme cold, fasting, all of that, but learning to play the drums was way out of my comfort zone.”
For Hemsworth, the real test was not physical strength, but overcoming stage fright and trusting his preparation:
“And you’ll see in the episode it didn’t come naturally to me, so I had to dig deep, embrace my fear and trust that all of the practicing I had done would pay off.”
The collaboration with Sheeran is one of several unique challenges featured in Limitless season 2, which shifts focus from sheer endurance to a more introspective exploration of pain, fear, and brain health. But Hemsworth’s candid admission shows that even a superhero on screen can find his biggest test not in battle, but behind a drum kit.
Limitless: Live Better Now is available on Disney+ and Hulu, and airs August 25, 2025 on National Geographic.
