Christoph Waltz’s Gothic ‘Frankenstein’ Replacement Scores Big on VOD Before Theatrical Release

Christoph Waltz’s new Dracula movie is due to arrive in theaters next month, but the film is already succeeding on streaming before its American premiere. Dracula, formerly titled Dracula: A Love Tale, has exploded on international VOD charts as one of the top 10 most popular movies on Prime Video and Apple TV. The film will be released in American theaters on February 6, where it will have a chance to add to its solid start at the box office. It grossed over $20 million during its international run last year and also stars Caleb Landry Jones, Zoë Beu, and Guillaume de Tonquédec. Dracula sits at a solid 75% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though this comes from only 20 reviews, so it is subject to change.

Christoph Waltz’s new Dracula movie comes from writer/director Luc Besson, who is best known for his work on the popular 1997 space sci-fi movie, The Fifth Element. Besson wrote and directed the film, which stars Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman. Besson is also famous for his work writing and directing Lucy, another sci-fi thriller starring Marvel veteran Scarlett Johansson. The film also stars Morgan Freeman and Pilou Asbæk, who recently appeared in the latest season of Apple TV’s Foundation. With Dracula, Besson steps away from the sci-fi genre and leans more towards gothic horror and romance.

Christoph Waltz is a two-time Oscar-winner for his performances in a pair of Quentin Tarantino movies. He picked up his first win in 2010 for his performance in the gritty Western Django Unchained, which is led by Jamie Foxx. He won just three years later in 2013 for his performance in the unorthodox WWII movie, Inglourious Basterds, which stars Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender. He’s also famous for playing the legendary James Bond villain Ernst Blofeld in Daniel Craig’s 007 movies.

What’s Next for Christoph Waltz After ‘Dracula’?

Following his role in Dracula, Waltz will next star opposite Jon Hamm and John Turturro in Wilder & Me, the adventure comedy currently in pre-production that’s expected to begin filming soon. Stranger Things veteran Maya Hawke has also joined the film’s ensemble cast. Waltz most recently featured in five episodes of Hulu’s smash-hit murder mystery series, Only Murders in the Building, and he also had a role in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Dracula once it hits screens in America next month.
