Christopher Nolan has done more than enough to cement his status as one of the greatest directors of all time, and one of his most famous outings from roughly 10 years ago is quietly blowing up on streaming. In 2017, Nolan teamed up with two Peaky Blinders stars, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, for Dunkirk, the visceral WWII movie following allied soldiers who are surrounded by the German army and evacuated after a fierce battle. Eight years after it first raided theaters, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk has returned to iTunes VOD charts, landing in the top 10 in several countries such as Moldova, Slovenia, and Zimbabwe.
In addition to Murphy and Hardy, Dunkirk also stars Barry Keoghan, who will make his Peaky Blinders debut in the Netflix spin-off movie, The Immortal Man. Dunkirk was a massive success in the eyes of critics when it first arrived in 2017, and all these years later, the film still holds a Certified Fresh 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 450 verified reviews. It also sits at a solid 81% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Christopher Nolan’s WWII movie also parlayed this critical acclaim into box office success — Dunkirk grossed $533 million globally against a $100 million budget.
For Nolan, Dunkirk was his first movie after his 2014 sci-fi masterpiece, Interstellar. He followed Dunkirk three years later with another sci-fi film, albeit one much more controversial. In 2020, Nolan directed Tenet, which stars Robert Pattinson and John David Washington. What many view as Nolan’s magnum opus came just a few years ago when he returned to the WWII genre for Oppenheimer, which won seven Oscars at the 2024 Academy Awards.
Christopher Nolan Loves Dwayne Johnson’s New Movie
A few weeks ago, Christopher Nolan praised Dwayne Johnson’s performance in his new MMA biopic, The Smashing Machine. Johnson stars as former UFC and Pride Championship fighter Mark Kerr in the film, which was written and directed by Benny Safdie and backed by A24. Of Johnson’s performance, Nolan said, “I don’t think you’ll see a better performance this year or most other years.” Johnson and Nolan have never worked together, but after he releases The Odyssey next year, Johnson could be in line for a role in his next film. The Smashing Machine is now available to watch at home on VOD.
