Three years after their last appearance in The Book of Boba Fett, we still don’t know the fate of one fan-favorite character from The Mandalorian, and I’m utterly shocked. Ever since its debut in 2019, The Mandalorian has introduced a wealth of brand-new characters to the Star Wars galaxy, in addition to reintroducing characters from other stories.
The Mandalorian season 2 especially brought many familiar faces to the forefront, beginning with Cobb Vanth in “Chapter 9: The Marshal.” Portrayed by Timothy Olyphant, the character from Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath book trilogy has since become a fan-favorite, but we still don’t know what his fate is after three whole years.
Star Wars Hasn’t Shown Cobb Vanth’s Fate After The Book Of Boba Fett
Star Wars brought Cobb Vanth back in The Book of Boba Fett, in the midst of Din Djarin essentially taking over Boba Fett’s storyline. The marshal of Mos Pelgo, renamed to Freetown, was last seen considering Mando’s plea on behalf of Boba Fett to fight against the Pykes, who had also been attempting to deal spice in Freetown’s territory.
This allowed for the famed bounty hunter Cad Bane to make his live-action debut, as he strolled into Freetown and gunned down both Marshal Vanth and his deputy. Initially, it was thought that Cobb might not have made it, but the final scene of The Book of Boba Fett reveals that Vanth was actually alive in Boba Fett’s bacta tank.
Vanth was about to gain a cybernetic limb, but three years later, we still don’t know for sure if this is the case – because Cobb Vanth has yet to return to the screen. The Mandalorian season 3 came and went with no mention of Cobb Vanth, or any indication that Din Djarin knows he’s alive.
What Cobb Vanth’s Story Could Look Like After Surviving The Shootout
Cobb Vanth is wholly dedicated to Freetown, as seen throughout both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. There isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his small town across the Dune Sea. After his injury, however, it could be that Vanth needs some additional time spent at Boba Fett’s palace, recovering and reconsidering his options.
The ending of The Book of Boba Fett made it seem as if Boba Fett wasn’t that interested in being daimyo of Mos Espa anymore, and it could be that he and Cobb Vanth joined forces somehow to watch over the city and town more vigilantly. Either way, Cobb Vanth likely hasn’t, and won’t, make his way off Tatooine.
Still, viewers are more than eager to see what’s happened to Cobb Vanth. His relationship with Din Djarin is one of the show’s strongest, and it would be wonderful to see the two of them on screen together again, potentially in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Either way, it’s long overdue for this beloved The Mandalorian character to come back somehow.
