DC’s New Absolute Justice League Origin Is A Giant Mistake

Warning: contains potential spoilers for Absolute Evil #1!

A new Justice League is coming together, and the team’s new origin could be one of DC’s biggest mistakes yet. DC’s Absolute Universe has put dark and modern spins on some of the publisher’s biggest heroes. Now, the Absolute villains are coming together in Absolute Evil #1, and their alliance could be the spark that brings the Justice League together.

Absolute Evil #1 will be written by Al Ewing and drawn by Giuseppe Camuncoli. Previously, DC teased that some of the Absolute Universe’s first villains, including the Joker, Veronica Cale and Hector Hammond would be uniting in response to the emergence of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. In the preview, Hammond attends a briefing with an unknown government official.

Absolute Evil #1 caps off the Absolute Line’s highly successful first year. It is built upon the premise that DC mainstays are without their usual privileges and advantages. For example, Batman is not wealthy and Superman was born to a working-class Kryptonian family. These visions of the venerable heroes have connected with fans, debuting to huge sales and multiple printings.

So far, all the heroes of DC’s Absolute Universe have worked alone, but this might be coming to an end. The actions of Hammond, Cale and others are purely reactionary. The villains of the Absolute line are looking to stomp out Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern before their careers even take off.

With their backs up against the wall, the Absolute heroes will have no choice but to work together. The powers that be of DC’s Absolute Earth are the inverse of the heroes: they are wealthy and have connections to both government and industry. It might even seem Hammond and company hold all the cards at the moment.

The Absolute line has taken some big creative risks, and bringing the villains together before the Justice League is one of its biggest swings yet. Various incarnations of the League have been brought together by a singular threat, as opposed to a gathering of the wealthy and the elite who are leveraging their privilege to eliminate a nascent heroic age.

Whether Absolute Evil will culminate in the formation of an Absolute incarnation of the Justice League remains to be seen. It would be in keeping with the Absolute line’s ethos to upend the League’s dynamic. Without their usual advantages, the League would have to rely more than ever on each other. The stories that would emerge from this could be all-timers.

Regardless, the Absolute villains are preparing to make one of the biggest mistakes in DC’s history. Absolute Earth, in a mirror of our own, is a powder-keg, set to go off at any time. Hector Hammond and his associate’s plans will no doubt backfire, destabilizing the planet and leading to the birth of a new Justice League.

Absolute Evil #1 is on sale October 1 from DC Comics.
