Denzel Washington’s $90 Million Famous Western Remake With Chris Pratt Finds Second Life on Streaming

Denzel Washington’s next movie begins streaming on Apple TV+ soon, but ahead of its debut, one of his older films has become a streaming success ahead of its 10th anniversary. Washington stars alongside Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Ethan Hawke (Training Day), Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil: Born Again), and Lee Byung-hun (Squid Game) in The Magnificent Seven, the 2016 Western following seven lone gunmen who are brought together to protect a town from the army of a private industrialist. The Magnificent Seven is currently streaming on Prime Video and MGM+ in America, but globally, it’s returned to VOD charts in several countries, such as Brazil and others.

The Magnificent Seven was moderately well-liked by critics and audiences upon release. The film sits at scores of 64% from critics and 71% from audiences in Rotten Tomatoes, which may not be anything to write home about, but they’re not poor enough to call the film a disaster. Unfortunately, it failed to find the box office success needed to warrant a hefty $90 million budget. It grossed only $160 million, and it needed closer to $200 million to be considered a profit for United Artists. Leading stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt were the first two cast in The Magnificent Seven.

Richard Wenk and Nic Pizzolatto wrote the script for The Magnificent Seven, which is based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Antoine Fuqua was tapped to direct the film, and it came two years after he first teamed up with Denzel Washington for The Equalizer. Fuqua later reunited with Washington for two more Equalizer movies. They first worked together 15 years prior on Training Day.

When Does Denzel Washington’s Next Movie Come Out?

Denzel Washington’s Highest 2 Lowest began playing in select theaters this weekend, and the film will premiere on Apple TV+ on September 5. The film is a Spike Lee joint, and similar to The Magnificent Seven, it’s also based on a popular Akira Kurosawa film, High and Low. The film currently sits at a strong 90% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter has also come to rest at 87%. The Last of Us star Jeffrey Wright can also be seen in the film.

The Magnificent Seven is one of the most popular VOD purchases globally and the film is streaming on Prime Video in America. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Washington’s future projects.
