Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1.If you’re a fan of crime thrillers, then Dexter: Resurrection is the perfect show to watch that will have you hooked from start to finish. There have been a lot of must-watch crime thriller shows from the past decade, and Paramount+ may have added a new one to the list. While most people have probably heard of Dexter, not everyone may be aware that there’s a sequel to the classic show.
The original Dexter is one of the best TV shows of all time. While its later seasons and finale may not have been great, the series was a phenomenon in its first four seasons. There have been three other Dexter shows since the original ended in 2013. The most recent — Dexter: Resurrection — is an absolute masterpiece that all crime thriller fans should check out.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 Is A Masterpiece Throughout All 10 Episodes
Simply put, Dexter: Resurrection season 1 is a masterpiece. All 10 episodes are phenomenal, both for longtime Dexter fans and for any crime thriller fans in general. The premiere of Resurrection season 1 was, admittedly, a bit slow, but it still “resurrects” Michael C. Hall’s iconic serial killer and set up a tremendous season. The premiere is the worst part of Resurrection season 1, and it’s still fantastic.
Once Resurrection really gets started, however, it never slows down for a second. It pits Dexter against a group of new serial killers in Resurrection — played by some all-star actors – and forces him to confront his past and future through his son, Harrison. With that setup, Resurrection not only has a thrilling cat-and-mouse plot as its main story, but it also serves up incredible emotions and conflicts.
Unlike other Dexter shows, Resurrection also kept its momentum all the way to the final moment. There are so many twists and turns in store, from killers escaping to unexpected character developments, that you’ll basically always be surprised. The ending of Resurrection season 1 also tied everything up in a bow while delivering a great fourth-wall break and more than enough setup for another season.
Dexter: Resurrection Proves Anyone Who Gave Up On Dexter Wrong
Dexter was once the biggest name in crime thrillers, but it fell off in tremendous fashion over the years. The ending of the original Dexter – also known as the “lumberjack” ending – was infamously divisive and went down as one of the worst TV finales ever. Then, the sequel series New Blood had a similarly controversial ending. It looked like Dexter was dead in the water for a while.
With the double disappointment of both Dexter and New Blood, a lot of people gave up on the franchise. It’s completely understandable; it was a franchise that delivered not one but two infuriating finales in a row, and that left a bad taste in many viewers’ mouths. That legacy, of two separate shows that had their wheels fall off right at the finish line, made Resurrection a huge gamble.

After all, who would have thought that another sequel to the original Dexter coming 12 years after the original and three years after the last failed sequel, would be any good? Dexter: Original Sin did pave the way in a sense, but it was still a huge gamble to put so much faith in Dexter. The franchise hadn’t put out a great season in well over a decade, but that gamble paid off.
Dexter: Resurrection has proven that everyone who wrote Dexter off as a franchise past its prime was wrong. Resurrection didn’t just prove that Dexter has some life left in it, it proved that Dexter is still capable of being top-tier, prestige television. I don’t think I’m alone in saying Dexter: Resurrection season 1 is the best Dexter story we’ve seen since season 4 of the original show.
