The Viper is an important leader of the Shadow Dragons faction in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, operating behind the scenes in the city of Minrathous. After the escape of the Elven gods into the world, you are asked to rescue this figure after they get captured by an enemy organization. The quest tied to this task offers great rewards, including a greater bond with the Shadow Dragons themselves.
Once the Elven gods started wreaking havoc in the world, a group called the Venatori kidnapped the Viper during the chaos. These enemies have always been a threat in Minrathous, but the Shadow Dragons have held them back as they’ve protected common people. With the Viper gone, the streets of Minrathous’ Dock Town have been overrun with Venatori, creating a dangerous situation for a daring rescue.
Other
side quests in
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
take place in Dock Town, a subsection of Minrathous. Many important missions take place in this specific location, so you may already been familiar with its layout while trying to save the Viper.
How To Start The Tempered Soul, Everlasting Quest
Complete Another Mission First
The quest tied to saving the Viper is called “The Tempered Soul, Everlasting,” but you cannot start this mission until you get through other events in Dock Town. You have to complete the “Last Rites” quest before the Viper is even kidnapped in the first place. This quest involves dealing with several Venatori ritual sites scattered around Minrathous and defeating plenty of enemies.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard How To Upgrade Faction Merchants
Faction Merchants in Dragon Age: The Veilguard can sell Rook powerful items, but their selections start weak until Rook trades with them for upgrades.
You’ll have to disrupt rituals at the Wharf Crossing North and Parthenius Main Docks locations in Dock Town during the “Last Rites” quest. The enemies here are guarding barriers created by blood crystals, which are relevant artifacts used to entrap the Viper later. Many of the enemies you face at the ritual sites will appear once again as you’re trying to save the Viper, so think about the best party combo in Dragon Age: The Veilguard to face these foes.
The
“Last Rites”
quest can be started when you read the note on a bulletin board in Glandivalis Square. Reading this note will mark down the locations of both Venatori ritual sites you have to deal with.
Completing “The Last Rites” will reward you with extra points towards your relationship with the Shadow Dragons faction in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You can also raise bonds with certain companions, especially if they are tied to the Shadow Dragons in some way. With XP earned as well, you should get a notification for “The Tempered Soul, Everlasting” the moment you finish this quest.
How To Save The Viper
Rescue The Mysterious Leader From Execution
When you get the quest tied to saving the Viper, you need to go to the Temple of Andraste in Dock Town right away. The Venatori are planning to execute the Shadow Dragons leader here and have taken extra measures to defend the location from his allies. Most of the paths to the Viper are blocked, so you have to find an alternate way into the Temple.
Go to the Andraste’s Watch Beacon, then travel right until you see a Gaatlok Barrel in the area. This Barrel can be struck and detonated to blow a hole in the nearby wall, giving you a way inside the Temple of Andraste. Follow the path in the Temple to its Courtyard, where you can ambush the Venatori enemies holding the Viper hostage.
It is best to have Neve in your party for missions involving the Shadow Dragons, as your bond increases with them for helping this faction. Those looking to pursue a
romance with Neve in
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
can raise their bond level higher by completing Shadow Dragons missions.
As you take down the first few Venatori executioners and mage, several more will spawn as the fight continues. Take out every enemy and destroy the Blood Crystals trapping the Viper in a magic barrier. Similar to the victims from “The Last Rites” quest, breaking each crystal will free the Viper and save their life.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Should You Go To Dock Town Or Treviso First?
Once the map opens up in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, players are free to visit either Dock Town or Treviso first – but what does this decision affect?
A small cutscene plays when you manage to break the Viper free from their Blood Crystal prison. Those who complete “The Tempered Soul, Everlasting” are rewarded with:
- 1,000 XP
- 400 Gold
- +250 Shadow Dragons Strength
- 2x Fade-Touched Silk
The best reward here is the increased bond with the Shadow Dragons faction, which increases by 350 Strength for completing both quests tied to the Viper. Anyone who takes the time to rescue the Viper in Dragon Age: The Veilguard will also free the city from the Venatori influence, causing it to become a safe place for people to travel through once again.
