Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is finally here, and it’s raised some very exciting possibilities for what the next entries may bring to the table. Though the remake largely remains faithful to the original NES game in terms of content, DQ3 HD-2D does contain some new additions to the story that help set the stage for the next games in the remake series.

When Square Enix first announced that Dragon Quest 3 would be receiving the remake treatment, the publisher made it clear that the first two entries of the venerated RPG series wouldn’t be far behind. With Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake set for release in 2025, there’s even more reason to be excited about these updated versions of classic games.

The Game’s True Ending Adds New Lore To The Series
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake adds a good deal of new content, but the best of it comes at the very end. During the events of DQ3‘s story, the hero’s party seeks assistance from the Dragon Queen, who tragically dies after giving birth to an egg. The HD-2D Remake adds a new scene after the credits in which the Dragon Queen’s high priest swears to protect her child and reveals his own name to be Hargon.

That name might not mean anything to those playing Dragon Quest for the first time, but anyone familiar with Dragon Quest 2 will recognize Hargon as that game’s main antagonist. Given that DQ3 is a prequel to the first two games, this Easter egg establishes a new origin for a legacy character in the lore of Dragon Quest and potentially rewrites his role in the following games.

The Upcoming Remakes Could Be Building A New Overarching Story
With this new revelation that Hargon was present for the events of DQ3, it opens the door for even more connections between the games. For example, Hargon could now play a role in Dragon Quest 1 as an associate of that game’s main villain, the Dragonlord. Connections could go even further, even tying the trilogy more deeply into the critically acclaimed Dragon Quest 11 to weave a grander narrative.

As reported by Famitsu (via Automaton), Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Hori has promised that playing the remake games in story order will lead to some new revelations by the time players reach the end of Dragon Quest 2. What those new revelations could be is anyone’s guess, but 2025 may prove to be a very good year for Dragon Quest fans, and this new scene at the end of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake may be a hint at the coming changes.
