Despite fan calls for her return, Elizabeth Olsen is keeping her cards close to her chest about whether she is appearing in Avengers: Doomsday or its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
First appearing in the post-credits scene of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Olsen played Wanda Maximoff as a supporting character throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga. In 2021, she headlined her own series with WandaVision, which saw her come into her own as a powerful-yet-morally-grey magic user called the Scarlet Witch.
Subsequently, Wanda was the primary antagonist of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a controversial arc for the fan-favorite Avenger. That film saw Wanda seemingly perish, and Olsen has not reprised her role in a mainline, live-action MCU project since its 2022 release.
In an appearance at Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo this weekend, Olsen got candid about whether Wanda will be back for the upcoming Avengers duology. “I don’t know nothing about any of it,” she quipped (via Marvel Updates on X). Likewise, she confirmed that she has not heard anything about VisionQuest, which is set to continue the story set up in WandaVision.
However, Olsen did reveal that she has “offered up things [she’d] like to do” and wants “to be of service to a story.” She elaborated that “every time” she has worked with Marvel, “it’s [been] character-driven” (via movietitan on Instagram). As the quality of Wanda’s arc mattered to Olsen, she appreciated that “it’s not like, ‘just throw her in something.’“
While Olsen did not offer specifics on what she has pitched to Marvel, the actress did note that she thinks that “House of M is just the coolest,” referencing an iconic X-Men storyline featuring Wanda. Likewise, she indicated that she “would love to get to work with Aubrey [Plaza] again.” Plaza played Lady Death/Rio Vidal in Agatha All Along, a direct spin-off of WandaVision that notably featured Wanda’s son Billy Maximoff/Wiccan.
Previously, Olsen gave a strongly positive response about returning to the MCU. “I want to see [her] return in this role because I think what they’ve done with her is really great, and I love the journey she’s taken,” said the actress. However, she has remained consistent in alleging not to know anything about the current slate of Marvel films, stating: “I think it’s always a fun one to get to go back into, and I just have no idea how or when, for sure.“
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars debuts almost exactly a year later on December 17, 2026.
