Ethan Hawke’s horror sequel, The Black Phone 2, hit theaters everywhere this weekend, but Hawke is also in the middle of leading a critically acclaimed Western drama that’s taking streaming charts by storm. Hawke stars alongside Tim Blake Nelson (Captain America: Brave New World), Kyle MacLachlan (Fallout), and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) in The Lowdown, the hit series following a civilian journalist who moonlights as a man so interested in the truth that it may kill him. The first five episodes of The Lowdown are now streaming on Hulu, and the series is still one of the most popular shows on American streaming charts.
The Lowdown earned a nearly perfect score of 98% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience-driven Popcornmeter has come to rest at 74%. However, this comes from less than 50 reviews at the time of writing, so it is subject to change with the sample size being so small. It’s been hard for fans not to compare The Lowdown to Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King, largely due to both series being set in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But the plot for each show is entirely different, even if there are a few noticeable similarities.
Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee dating back to his work in the early 2000s on Training Day. He did not win for his performance in the Antoine Fuqua-directed film, but his co-star, Denzel Washington, took home his second Oscar for his role in the film. Hawke has since been nominated for Before Sunset in 2005, Before Midnight in 2014, and Boyhood in 2015. His roles in The Black Phone franchise and Moon Knight have also lifted him to new levels of popularity in recent years.
Will There Be a Second Season of ‘The Lowdown’?
Hulu has yet to announce if The Lowdown will be renewed for a second season of canceled after its first. The Western series has already ticked the box of critical acclaim, so it will likely fall to viewership as the final deciding factor to whether it will get another season. It will also fall to creator Sterlin Harjo to come up with another suitable story for a second season, if Hulu is interested in moving forward. There are three more episodes remaining in The Lowdown Season 1, with new episodes premiering on Hulu every Tuesday at 9 PM EST.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of The Lowdown and watch the first five episodes on Hulu.
