Even Hardcore New Avengers Fans Forget About This Hulk-Tier Member

The Marvel Comics spinoff superteam, the The Avengers

, has changed rosters multiple times over the years and has included various powerhouse heroes who could give the Hulk

a run for his rage-fueled might and gamma-powered abilities. On one specific iteration of the New Avengers that worked alongside a heroic version of the infamous A.I.M. organization, the team added a towering mech to its cast that easily proved it worthy of the “Hulk-tier” moniker.

As an on-again-off-again member of the Avengers, fans know exactly how dangerous the Hulk can be when he starts rampaging across the battlefield, to say nothing about how destructive he can be when he loses control over his unbridled rage, with the list of who can stand toe-to-toe against this Green Goliath being relatively short.

In 2016’s The New Avengers #9, an issue that was part of the “Avengers: Standoff!” storyline that followed the mystery of the gated community known as Pleasant Hill, the members of the New Avengers joined forces to pilot a giant robot named Avenger Five, a Power Rangers-esque mech with the power to stop a Godzilla-sized monster, and by extension, potentially the Incredible Hulk too.

Sunspot and his colleague explain Avenger Five to the rest of the New Avengers

Rebranded as Avengers Idea Mechanics in this volume of New Avengers after Roberto Da Costa, aka the New Mutants’ Sunspot, bought A.I.M. and dedicated it to less evil endeavors, this arc saw the New Avengers attacked by a super soldier-powered monster known as American Kaiju as a retaliatory effort by a vengeful S.H.I.E.L.D. after A.I.M. broke Rick Jones out of custody. Forced to activate Avenger Five, a thirty-story-tall robot resembling a domino-masked superhero, Sunspot gave the team a stylish new weapon in their defense against American Kaiju’s assault on Avengers Island.

Sentry Is Great, But The New Avengers’ Greatest Member Will Surprise All You MCU Fans

Dozens of heroes have claimed a spot on an Avengers roster, with the New Avengers’ greatest member not being Sentry but someone far more surprising.

Piloted by Sunspot, White Tiger, Power Man, Toni Ho, Max Brashear, and Aikku Jokinen aka Pod, via multi-consciousness control, Avenger Five is described as a new version of A.I.M.’s Quintronic Man that combines the effort of six people — in this case a mixture of New Avengers and the engineers who developed Avenger Five — into one giant mech with the power to take on the Hulk-tier threat that is American Kaiju. Using its metallic fists to strike American Kaiju with crippling force, Avenger Five doesn’t have too many offensive techniques to speak of save for one last-ditch attack.

A Canon Hulk vs Avenger Five Fight Would Settle Who Is More Powerful, but Who Would Win?

Avenger Five Hasn’t Been Seen in Years

Avenger Five punches American Kaiju in the face to start a battle

As seen in this New Avengers arc, Avenger Five is more than capable of taking on American Kaiju, a towering character who already has Hulk-tier strength thanks to his own gamma enhancements bolstered by Mutant Growth Hormone, Pym Particles, and even Curt Connors’ Lizard Formula. Eventually forced to use a contingency plan to defeat American Kaiju where Avenger Five vented its “gamma reactor” to transform the beast back into Todd Ziller, this fight effectively shows Avenger Five’s Hulk-tier status, with the only question remaining being who would win in an Avenger Five vs Hulk fight to crown who’s the strongest?

Avengers Mech Strike comic series featured Avengers piloting giant robots.

It stands to reason that Avenger Five would have put up a good fight against Bruce Banner’s darker half had they ever fought, but it would be foolish to count Hulk out in any situation regardless of the size or strength of the foes he battles, with Avenger Five likely going down in a heap of twisted metal after the Hulk unleashes his full power. Unfortunately, Avenger Five hasn’t been seen in New Avengers comics since the team had to abandon Avengers Island in the aftermath of this arc, making a Hulk vs Avenger Five fight technically still a possibility!

The New Avengers #9 is available from Marvel Comics.
