Excited for ‘The Brave and The Bold’? Go Back to ‘Year One’ With Stunning New Batman Comic Collectible

With Superman succeeding in theaters, it’s finally a great time to be a DC fan where the big screen is concerned. However, it’s always been a great time to be a fan if you love action figures, thanks to companies like McFarlane Toys, NECA, and Mezco Toyz. In fact, Mezco Toyz lit up San Diego Comic-Con last month with their wide array of DC Comics figures, including one based on a beloved Batman comic book run.

A part of Mezco’s One:12 Collective series, their latest DC figure is based on the comic series Batman: Year One. There’s no release date yet and the piece isn’t up for pre-order at this time, but the company perfectly captured the essence of The Dark Knight’s first minimalistic costume. The classic black-and-gray Batsuit with the fat black bat symbol has become synonymous with the character. This figure now joins Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman, and The Dark Knight in Mezco’s One:12 Collective premium series.

Taking place in the pages of Batman #404 to 407, this four-issue arc by writer Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns) and artist David Mazzucchelli redefined the character’s origin for a new generation of readers. The 1987 story follows a young Bruce Wayne trying to establish himself as Gotham’s greatest fear while Lieutenant James Gordon is trying to fight off the corruption in the GCPD. It is mostly focused on Batman taking down the mob, but it does feature beloved rogues’ gallery members like Catwoman.

The story was adapted into a direct-to-video animated film in 2011 that remains one of the best-reviewed Batman films, with a glowing 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The adaptation also came to 4K Blu-ray for the first time a few years back. Even though the comic arc is almost 40 years old, elements of it can be seen in other memorable films, like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman (1989), Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Batman. The merchandise for Year One has also picked up in recent years. Alongside this new figure from Mezco, McFarlane Toys debuted their DC Multiverse figures based on the storyline, including Batman and James Gordon. It will be exciting to see if McFarlane or Mezco continue their Year One waves in the future.
