Fan-Favorite Assassin Anime Gets Live-Action Movie Following Netflix Success

The Sakamoto Days manga is reportedly getting a live-action adaptation, as the conclusion of Season 1 of the Netflix adaptation arrives this week. The anime series first premiered in January 2025, starring Matthew Mercer as the retired, legendary assassin Taro Sakamoto, and has since become a streaming success. Now, the manga that the series is based on is set to receive a live-action treatment, scheduled for release next year.

The Sakamoto Days live-action adaptation is going to be a feature film, set to release during Japan’s Golden Week (late April to Early May) in 2026, according to Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. While the official cast list has yet to be revealed, a teaser visual was posted on Toho Movie’s official social media account, showcasing what Taro Sakamoto would look like in the flesh. The anime’s author, Yuto Suzuki, commented on the upcoming project on social media, thanking fans for their support and expressing excitement about seeing their work on the big screen.

“Sakamoto Days will be made into a live-action movie! What would happen if I went on a rampage like this in a place like this in the real world? I’ve had this fantasy ever since I was in elementary school. It’s finally happening on the big screen! I’m really looking forward to it! This is all thanks to our readers who support us every day! Thank you so much! The production team is also super impressive, so you’re sure to enjoy it! Be sure to check it out at the cinema!”

At the moment, there is no news on whether the feature will be released in the U.S. at a later date and if there will be an English dub.

What Is ‘Sakamoto Days’ About?

Sakamoto Days is an anime series based on the ongoing manga of the same name, first published in 2020. The manga and the Netflix show tell the story of Taro Sakamoto, a legendary hitman who retired and now runs a convenience store with his wife and young daughter. Five years later, a massive bounty was placed on Sakamoto, offering ¥1 billion to those who managed to kill him. It’s up to him and his allies to find out who put this bounty, while also adhering to his wife’s “no-kill” policy, or risk getting divorced.

Season 1 of the anime consists of a total of 22 episodes, with the final episode scheduled to air tomorrow. There is currently no news on whether Season 2 has been greenlit. Alongside Mercer, the English dub of the show also features Dallas Liu (Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender), Rosalie Chiang, Rosie Okumura, Grace Lu, Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Aleks Le (Solo Leveling), and Vinnie Hacker.

The Sakamoto Days live-action film is scheduled for release in Japan in 2026. In the meantime, Sakamoto Days Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix. Follow Collider to stay updated.
