James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash is already surging up Disney+’s streaming charts ahead of its December 19 release. Avatar: Fire and Ash | A Special Look is the streamer’s promotional preview of the upcoming sci-fi epic set to introduce viewers to a new, more aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Ash People. The short feature is currently charting in the Top 10 in several international markets, including Croatia, Albania, Romania, the Czech Republic, Argentina, and more. The promotional clip is performing especially well in Hong Kong, South Korea, Germany, and Spain, where it holds steady in the Top 5.
The preview’s strong streaming performance is a testament to the growing anticipation for the next chapter in Cameron’s billion-dollar franchise. Avatar: Fire and Ash picks up after Avatar: The Way of Water, as Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldaña) family grapples with grief after Neteyam’s (Jamie Flatters) death. However, their encounter with the Ash People, led by the fiery Varang (Oona Chaplin), escalates the conflict on Pandora like never before.
The upcoming film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Bailey Bass, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, and Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, among others. In an interview with ELLE, Saldaña shared that Avatar: Fire and Ash will mark a turning point for the Sullys and the world they live in. The Emilia Pérez star described the third installment in the Avatar franchise as “heart-wrenching” and added that it offers some valuable lessons on parenting and coping with loss.
James Cameron Reveals the Immense Pressure ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Is Carrying
In an interview with Discussing Film, Cameron confessed that Avatar: Fire and Ash is premiering under massive box office expectations. The director explained that the studio initially pushed back on his decision to expand the Avatar saga beyond three sequels before ultimately greenlighting a five-film arc. Cameron shared that the original plan shifted when the story for Avatar: The Way of Water grew so complex that it had to be split into two separate films.
He added that the scale of this expansion raised legitimate concerns behind the scenes. However, the director had to push back by pointing to the franchise’s profitability. The original Avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.9 billion worldwide, while the second installment was also a major box office success with a global collection of $2.3 billion. That unprecedented box office performance has placed intense pressure on Cameron to deliver another multibillion-dollar theatrical run.
The director also shared that while footage for Avatar 4 has already been shot, the franchise’s future ultimately depends on how well Avatar: Fire and Ash performs. In an earlier conversation with Collider, Cameron had hinted that the later Avatar sequels take even bolder creative swings and that he hopes to see them reach the screen.
Avatar: Fire and Ash | A Special Look is now streaming exclusively on Disney+, while the full film is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
