January is usually a quiet month at the box office, but, thankfully, Gerard Butler is making quite the tradition of offering some blood-pumping action to dust off those early-year blues. After releasing Plane in January 2023, Butler returned with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera last year and has recently debuted Greenland 2: Migration in theaters. Alas, the latter is drawing plenty of negative response from audiences and critics, with Collider’s Nate Richard writing, “There’s not much more you can do with this story, and upon watching the movie, you can clearly tell they were reaching with this one” in his review.
As Greenland 2 continues its theatrical run, another similarly received Butler effort is finding success on streaming. At the time of writing, the critically panned disaster flick Geostorm is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi in the U.S. Earning just 18% from critics and 35% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the feature directorial debut of Dean Devlin was ripped apart by many who watched it, with the consensus on the site reading, “Lacking impressive visuals, well-written characters, or involving drama, Geostorm aims for epic disaster-movie spectacle but ends up simply being a disaster of a movie.” A synopsis for this disappointing disaster flick reads:
“After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But something has gone wrong, as the system built to protect Earth is attacking it, and it becomes a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone along with it.”
‘Geostorm’ Wasn’t a Complete Failure
Although Geostorm boasted a hefty $100 million production budget, it at least managed to overcome the all-important $200 million mark during its 2017 theatrical run. In total, the film earned a global haul of $223 million, split between a disappointing $33.7 million in domestic revenue and $189.7 million from overseas markets. In its opening weekend, the movie finished in a respectable second place on the domestic box office charts, missing out on top spot to Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.
