After a grueling and infuriating road to release, Grand Theft Auto 6 is finally poised to launch in November this year, marking the end of what has been months of speculation and rumors about what gameplay will actually entail. There’s very likely never been a game as highly anticipated as GTA 6 in the history of the medium, and Rockstar certainly has some high expectations to meet.
With official information being so sparse when it comes to GTA 6 and the release date inching ever closer, many gamers are a bit shocked that we haven’t received an update on the game’s price tag or pre-order information. Given we are just five months out from launch, fans are expecting an official marketing push to begin any day now, and were hopeful that we’d get a price update last month at Take-Two’s most recent earnings call.
After coming up empty-handed from the earnings call update on exactly how much Grand Theft Auto 6 will cost, fans on Reddit are starting to grow frustrated and are starting to feel that they’re being strung along.
While the May earnings call for Take-Two was a bit of a nothingburger (which isn’t all that surprising given the nature of these financial reports), we did get a sense of when Rockstar and Take-Two will provide an actual price tag for Grand Theft Auto 6, with CEO Strauss Zelnick saying the company is still on track to begin marketing this summer.
The game’s cost is sure to be revealed once pre-orders go live, which could be any day now given these recent statements, but with hype so high around the game’s release this fall, gamers are a bit annoyed a specific price update wasn’t provided and are left speculating. The consensus seems to be that the standard $70 price point for new releases will apply to GTA 6, but fans are a bit concerned how much deluxe editions may cost.
“Rockstar knows they can sell it at any price point they want,” says Theunsaltedpeanut, “but it will be good PR to just slap the base game at $70 then do whatever the hell stupid number they want for the limited edition to get the whale dollars.” Others feel the fact there’s still no been a price tag reveal indicates Take-Two and Rockstar are considering a higher cost of entry.
“This will be the single biggest media launch of all time,” says Silver_Branch3034. “[Even] if they upped the price to $80-$100 people would still buy it in droves. Point being that it sounds to me like they are still considering charging more for this single game and selling that under the ‘biggest game ever’ justification.”
Gamers like Midnight7000 fear the worst, fearful that Rockstar and Take-Two could set a dangerous precedent in the industry: “I will not purchase this game on principle if they look to start the trend of £100 games.”
Ultimately, the lack of pricing information for Grand Theft Auto 6 has sparked a new wave of anxiety across gamers, implying that the price tag still hasn’t been agreed upon behind the scenes and both Rockstar and Take-Two could be weighing their options for a higher dollar amount. While there’s no reason to believe the base game will exceed the standard industry price at this point, until we get an official price update with a confirmed dollar amount, fans will continue to worry.
