Iconic video game developer Hideo Kojima shares his review of KPop Demon Hunters, the cultural sensation that debuted on Netflix this past year. Since its premiere in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has gone on to become the most-watched Netflix movie of all time. The fantasy musical adventure also has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been steadily picking up award nominations.
KPop Demon Hunters follows a trio of K-pop stars moonlighting as demon hunters whose bond is tested by one of them harboring the secret that she is half-demon herself. In addition to its critical acclaim and record-breaking streaming numbers, KPop Demon Hunters was a box office hit for the two weekends it was in theaters, while its soundtrack has topped music charts.
Kojima seems to have come to the KPop Demon Hunters fandom late, sharing yesterday (December 21) via X: “I casually started watching KPop Demon Hunters, got completely hooked, and ended up crying my eyes out by the end. It was so, so good.“ KPop Demon Hunters has been widely praised for its music, animation, and near-universal themes. Check out Kojima’s post agreeing with this below:
As a respected creator, Kojima’s opinion sparks interest among audiences. He recently reviewed the hit new sci-fi series Pluribus from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, calling it “absolutely incredible” while comparing it to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. As is also the case with KPop Demon Hunters, many people agree with Kojima’s positive assessment.
KPop Demon Hunters has secured its Critics’ Choice Award and Golden Globe nominations for best animated movie, competing with the likes of Arco, Zootopia 2, and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. It came away with three 2026 Golden Globe nominations in total, also recognized for Best Original Song (“Golden”) and Cinematic and Box Office Achievements.
Thus, KPop Demon Hunters is on track to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and is a frontrunner to win. It will also most likely be a contender for Best Original Song, which is uniquely competitive this year, with offerings from Wicked: For Good and Sinners. All the while, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in development at Netflix and Sony, with the core creative team returning.
It’s hard to understate what a massive phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters has become, but most agree that underlying it all is a truly deserving movie. Kojima is only one of the most recent people to be charmed by its humor and heartrending plot, though he may convince a few others who have gone without seeing it to check it out now.
