The James Bond franchise is all set for a reboot under the direction of Denis Villeneuve; the filmmaker is currently working on the third Dune film, after which he will presumably focus his attention on the new 007 movies. No star has been cast in the titular role yet, although punters have been rather busy in these past few months. Meanwhile, Daniel Craig has seamlessly transitioned to his next franchise: Knives Out. He retired as Bond with 2021’s No Time to Die, which did rather well at the box office despite being delayed for a few years. Craig’s top-grossing Bond film, however, remains Skyfall. The blockbuster, which is often regarded as the best Bond movie of all time, was recently overtaken at the domestic box office by Jurassic World Rebirth.
The Dinosaur movie’s $305 million running domestic haul puts it ahead of Skyfall‘s $304 million haul from 2012. Directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes, Skyfall remains the highest-grossing Bond movie of all time; it grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide. Mendes returned for a direct follow-up, titled Spectre. The movie opened to mixed reviews and grossed around $100 million less than Skyfall domestically. At the global box office, Spectre generated nearly $900 million. Both movies cost over $200 million to produce, but Skyfall continues to enjoy acclaim even over a decade after its release.
The film holds a 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Sam Mendes brings Bond surging back with a smart, sexy, riveting action thriller that qualifies as one of the best 007 films to date.” Craig began his Bond journey with the acclaimed hit Casino Royale, which was followed by the divisive Quantum of Solace. Both movies made around $160 million domestically, and around $600 million worldwide. Craig’s final Bond film was No Time to Die, which grossed around $160 million domestically as well, but made more than $750 million worldwide.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Opened to Mixed Reviews
Rebirth, on the other hand, has grossed over $700 million worldwide itself. The movie cost a reported $180 million to produce, and opened to a so-so 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in the lead roles, and is expected to start a new trilogy. Each installment of the previous trilogy grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making Jurassic Park about as lucrative a franchise as James Bond. You can watch Rebirth in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
