In ‘Gangs of Galicia’ season 2, Jose Padin has to reckon with many things, the most significant one being the downfall of his longstanding crime family. However, another important development occurs in his personal life in the aftermath of Maria’s death. After the tragedy, Berta confronts him with the idea that the loss may very well be his own rather than just her family’s. This is an allusion to the fact that he and Berta share a past that makes it plausible for him to be the father of her daughter, Laura. Once this idea is implanted in the narrative, it becomes a key aspect of the narratives of multiple characters. However, the truth behind this possible biological connection remains muddled in the face of Padin’s suspicious moves and inkling for deceit. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Padin Shares a Dubious DNA Test Result With Laura
Early on in season 2, Padin is faced with the possibility of being Laura’s father. However, instead of stewing on the matter, the crime lord moves fast to find results. He sends his men to stealthily break into the cafe owner’s house and steal a hairbrush. This provides him with access to her DNA profile, which he needs to run a paternity test. Around the same time, he also visits a doctor in Madrid in connection with a possibly fatal medical condition. Interestingly enough, as these events overlap, a certain amount of ambiguity is infused into both of these medical tests. After receiving the conclusions, Padin asks the doctor to create a fabricated, untrue test result.

While this forgery was requested in regard to his own medical tests, there’s a strong possibility that Padin actually asked the doctor to feign the paternity test. In one instance, we see him discussing the DNA test with the medical professional, highlighting how they have a 99.9% accuracy rate. Later, the crime boss visits the local cafe, where he shares the paternity test with Laura. This becomes an instrumental beat in the latter’s story, as it’s the first time she learns about her mother’s apparent affair with Padin. In light of the new revelation, she also realizes that the affair was likely a key reason in her father’s decision to abandon her and her mother. This creates plenty of friction between the mother-daughter duo and even compels Berta to a fortunately failed attempt at suicide.
Nonetheless, the fact that the test result shared by Padin is negative remains a crucial source of relief for Laura. While there would have been some advantage to learning that she doesn’t share a biological father with Ana, having Padin as a father would have opened up an entirely new can of worms. However, it’s possible that this is the exact reason why the crime boss may have chosen to create a counterfeit test result to share with the young woman in order to retain a level of distance between her and the Padin crime family. If this is the case, the climactic attack on Padin’s life and his ensuing battle against death might prove to have a greater impact on Laura. Either way, given the ambiguity surrounding the DNA test, these uncertainties can only be cleared up through the story’s continuation in a potential season 3.
