Teresa Palmer and Benjamin Walker star in the romantic drama The Choice, now streaming on Netflix. It tells the love story of a charming veterinarian and a feisty medical student. But their love affair, spanning over the course of a decade, is ultimately tested as their lives take an unexpected turn.
Ross Katz, who’s known for directing the movies Taking Chance and Adult Beginners, helms the romance film from a screenplay written by Bryan Sipe. Sipe is best known for writing the script for the comedy-drama film Demolition starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Besides Walker and Palmer, the cast is made up of Maggie Grace, Alexandra Daddario, Tom Welling, Tom Wilkinson, and many other talented actors. It was released in theaters in February 2016, and now Netflix subscribers finally get the chance to watch it.
Since so many movies are adapted from other works, you might be wondering if The Choice is an adaptation as well. No worries! We shared if the romantic drama is a film adaptation down below.
Is The Choice based on a book?
Yes, The Choice is a film adaptation. It’s based on the 2007 book of the same name by best-selling romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. It’s just one of Sparks New York Times best-selling books. His other novels include The Notebook, The Wedding, Message in a Bottle, The Last Song, Dear John, A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe, The Lucky One, Safe Haven, The Best of Me, The Longest Ride etc.
Eleven of his books have been turned into films, including The Choice. You can purchase the book on Amazon as a paperback, hardcover, or e-book at different prices.
Here’s the book synopsis via Nicholas Sparks’ official website:
Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life—boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies—he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the appealing redhead seems to have a chip on her shoulder about him…and the presence of her longtime boyfriend doesn’t help. Despite himself, Travis can’t stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, The Choice ultimately confronts us with the most heart wrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?
