James Gunn Already Knows Which Unannounced DC Projects He’s Directing Next

James Gunn’s DC Universe is in full swing with the latest entry, John Cena’s Peacemaker Season 2, making major revelations while leaving fans on a cliffhanger. By far, DC has successfully delivered the aforementioned series, along with animated Creature Commandos, David Corenswet-led Superman. The fan-favorite director’s eyes are now set on Man of Tomorrow, which he wrote and will direct, which will take forward the story of Superman and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). Meanwhile, we’ll be treated with projects like Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and Tom Rhys HarriesClayface. However, Gunn has unannounced plans beyond the current slate and knows well what he’s going to direct in the future.

Gunn was speaking at a press conference (via ComicBook), where he teased that Man of Tomorrow is an idea he’s “had for a long time.” Though he didn’t stop there, as he added, “Honestly, I think I know the next few I’m directing. I already know.” The director noted there’s a larger narrative at play and there are certain characters whose story he’d like to tell himself. “It’s a part of the plan of the DCU. There is one big story,” Gunn said. Further adding:

“On the one hand, everything is gonna be okay to watch by itself, but also there’s a bigger story being told that involves, say, Salvation. And so that story involves Rick Flag, it involves Lex & Superman. So there’s those movies that I’m gonna be directing. That’s the plan right now, at least. I may get so f–king tired that I can’t do it, because I’m pretty tired. But we’ll see. But there’s a plan that I’m gonna do. You know, it’s a couple more, at least.”

What Do We Know About ‘Man of Tomorrow’?

The sequel announcement came sooner than anyone expected, which means Gunn was clear on where he wants to take his characters next. Man of Tomorrow will fly into theatres two years from now. The director previously told Collider that the movie isn’t Superman 2. He explained, “I like my movies to be different. Guardians 1 is not the same as Guardians 3. They’re different. And Man of Tomorrow will not be the same as Superman. And it is Lex’s story too, so it’s the two of them. That colors it in a totally different way.”

Man of Tomorrow will be released July 9, 2027. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
